The Sixth Extinction

Character(s): Gabriel "Sylar" Gray and Claire Bennet
Summary: Building 26 is never shut down. No one convinces the president that it's best to just drop the matter of evolved humans, and Danko is given cart blanche to deal with the super-powered threat as he sees fit. In the next century the Evolved are hunted to the brink of extinction, either out-right exterminated, or imprisoned and exploited for their ability. The number of specials used in this way grows fewer and fewer as time and mishaps progress, but one type is still coveted above all. Exterminating a regenerator is exceedingly difficult, anyway...
Status: In progress/PRIVATE

"Just one thing," Sylar told her, putting protective but not grabby arms about her, cradling her as she snuggled in. "That whatever else we are, labeled or not, you can at least call me your friend. You can, if you want to, and I don't need any more serious assurance than that." He hugged her gently, comfortable with winging it. He was the man without a plan, and it suited him fine.

"I think we're beyond that..." Claire smiled, happy to hear that he wasn't expecting anything greater than that. "You are definitely my friend." She turned her head, shining her grin up to him.

"Not to sound too girl-cliche, but what are you thinking?" Which she knew was a silly question, but she truly wanted the answer.

He was quiet a moment thinking about his own thoughts before answering honestly. "Part of it won't sound good at first, because I was reflecting on when we were still fighting like old enemies. I don't care about the irony. Sure it's a little unexpected but it's an old faerie tale, Beauty and the Beast.

"But when you were still pushing all my buttons and I was stewing in anger I was trying to come up with the worst way to make you eat your words. ...just now I was marveling at how differently it all turned out. Appreciating being wrong for once, about you and about myself," then he smirked. "But just before that I was thinking you're a damn good kisser."

"What are you, one-hundred and thirty going on fourteen?" Claire snorted, her petite hand gripping at Sylar's hip playfully, sticking out her tongue and laughing. "Though, you're not so bad yourself."
Jan. 13th, 2010 09:30 am (UTC)
"I think I said twelve last time we talked about this, but twelve-year-old me never had a chance with the ladies. I didn't kiss my first girl until Junior prom and thaaat was just awkward," he laughed at his late-blooming teenage self.
Jan. 13th, 2010 09:35 am (UTC)
"Ooooh!! How so?" Claire asked, the girl's ears certainly perking up at that. "I would love to hear stories about how tragic your school life was. Especially since you are now sharing a bed with a bona fide cheerleader." She winked. "And kissing her too."
Jan. 13th, 2010 09:58 am (UTC)
"Hah! It only took me more than a century," he laughed then sighed then started telling stories. "So, you may have figured out by now I didn't have a big circle of friends in school and those of the female persuasion were an even smaller minority.

"The one girl who was nice to me, consistently, was Sammie Boring. She played the tuba in both marching and concert band. Very kind, but very plain, a little stout and not really known for flirting, unless whipping dirtclods at boys harder than they threw them at her in the third grade counted.

"Neither of us really had options, but we were trying to look normal for our families, so I put on a tux and she put on a dress and got her older sister to help her with her make up and we went to prom. We didn't dance much and we left a little early to avoid any 'Carrie'-like harrassment and since it was Queens we took the subway home because neither of us could drive a car."

He shook his head ruefully. "Maybe the punch was spiked or maybe I just didn't want to leave high school having never even kissed, but at one point I just turned and went for it, right on the lips and she was so stunned that she didn't move for a good count of five, and then she just burst out laughing at me.

"Thaaat's when I found out why she was always spending so much time with the girls from a neighboring field hockey team..." even now he flushed a bit in the dark.

"Awwww." Claire faux-frowned, nuzzling him slightly. "That's terrible... and hilarious, but I do feel bad for you." She smiled up at him again. "I wish I had stories like that, but I don't. I really do wish I could say I understand or that I can feel your pain, but I can't. I'm actually kind of sorry that I can't. I mean, I wasn't a bitchy cheerleader, by any means, but I did have to play the game to an extent."
Jan. 13th, 2010 10:15 am (UTC)
"Claire, you're a beautiful girl with an amazing personality. Even if you hadn't cheered, you would have had a pack of friends. You're a light, the kind people are drawn to. I wasn't. I was dark and weird. I was carrying a trauma I couldn't remember for what it was or hope to articulate, and even at my friendliest, I was shy, solitary and withdrawn. You don't have to know my pain, personally. It's enough that you'll listen now and sympathize, at least. No one else has ever given the smallest damn to where I've come from," he offered a slightly sad, but deeply appreciative smile.

That pained her a bit. Claire never liked the fact that young life was so harsh. Why did children have to be so cruel? Why did people have to be so cruel?

"I'm sorry." She said, her voice now slightly heavy. She never gave this guy a chance either until now. Not until it was in her best interest. Now, she got to see Sylar not as the monster he portrayed himself as, but the man who got left behind by the people who should have cared for him. Claire shifted, brining her body snugly up against his, raising herself so that her arm was across his chest and her nose was buried in the crook of his neck. She kissed him there, just a small, soft touch of the lips.

"I'm drawn to you." She nuzzled her nose against the stubble of his lower jaw as she cooed in a whisper. "And I certainly give a damn."
Jan. 13th, 2010 10:42 am (UTC)
"Can I ask what it was?" his own arm came to rest naturally across her lower back as she shifted higher. "You were hellbent on beating it out of here when I first brought you home, and I wasn't exactly on my best behavior at first, either. Why did you change your mind?" Just curiosity. No demands. No judgement on her answer. This was not a test.
Jan. 13th, 2010 06:31 pm (UTC)
"I don't really know..." Claire shrugged, her breath hot against his skin. "You were a lot nicer than I thought you would be and you took such good care of me. The more time I spent with you, the more I realized you weren't such a bad guy." She explained.

"And it's not like you're hard to look at." She ended with a giant smile and another slightly more affectionate nip to the brunette's neck. This was nice. She was really enjoying the closeness.

Some might have called Claire's answer the definition of stockholm syndrome, but Sylar certainly wasn't about to point that out. He just grinned at the compliment, still gratified that Claire could be attracted to him. "Mm, that feels nice." It had taken him a while to get comfortable with being physical, but now he was more house cat than feral. He enjoyed being cuddled and touched.
Jan. 13th, 2010 09:18 pm (UTC)
"I needed this." She said as shifted slightly to a more perminantly comfortable position. "I needed someone to be close to. Someone who will take care of me for a while. Someone I can bear my heart to who won't abandon me." Claire's voice actually sounded a bit thick, like someone had already betrayed her.
Jan. 13th, 2010 10:05 pm (UTC)
"After everything you've done for me, Claire, I'd have to take total leave of my senses to do anything like that," he assured. "I mean, I can't promise we'll never have misunderstandings, we're bound to argue sometimes, being headstrong people, but I won't just up and disappear." He kissed the crown of her head gently.
