The Sixth Extinction

Character(s): Gabriel "Sylar" Gray and Claire Bennet
Summary: Building 26 is never shut down. No one convinces the president that it's best to just drop the matter of evolved humans, and Danko is given cart blanche to deal with the super-powered threat as he sees fit. In the next century the Evolved are hunted to the brink of extinction, either out-right exterminated, or imprisoned and exploited for their ability. The number of specials used in this way grows fewer and fewer as time and mishaps progress, but one type is still coveted above all. Exterminating a regenerator is exceedingly difficult, anyway...
Status: In progress/PRIVATE

"It fits really nicely." Claire called out from the bathroom, slipping her feet into the just slightly took big shoes. "But it's really cute. Did you steal this from a child?" She accused playfully, opening the door looking much prettier than she had so far whilst wearing Sylar's flannels. "Thanks you. I feel much better about myself."

"My neighbor, Vivienne. She's an airhead, but a nice girl with good taste. She'll want that back soon, but we can have you some things of your own by then," he smiled at her improved disposition. "So if you're up to it we can go find you some things. I can rent a mobility assisance chair if you start feeling tired."

"Actually, believe it or not, the more I've been walking, the better I've been feeling." The blond smiled. "I'll probably be exhausted when we're done, but I think a nice jaunt around a shopplex will be good for me."

Claire actually liked the idea of going shopping for nicer things. "Do you think I can get my hair cut while we're out too?" She asked suddenly, pulling at a gold lock. Part of her felt like she was taking advantage of Sylar, but the other parts kept telling her that he owed it to her for what he'd done to her all those years ago. Damn straight he should be buying her clothes and pampering her.

And yet... there was this tiny voice... in the back of Claire's brain...

'He isn't much of a monster anymore.... is he?'

"Whatever you want," Sylar nodded, indulgant. And why not? As long as there was still some precious element out there, Sylar would never want for anything. He could turn lead into gold and gold into anything else, all he needed was a buyer and he was clever enough to find those when he needed, cover his tracks in regard to his sources. And that was only necessary if he lost his high-yeilding accounts, which due to prudence this time he had not. His antiques dealer had no idea who his alternate identity was or where he lived. "Whatever you're up for."

"How about shopping, hair cut, ice cream and then more shopping?" Claire giggled, feeling young again. Though her body hadn't changed and she would always look like a late teens early twenties girl, she was old and dated, sometimes feeling just as disconnected as Sylar described.

Shopping brought out the little cheerleader in her.

"But do I have to shop with that guy... er... whatshisface... um..." She thought for a moment. "Sean! I don't have to go shopping with Sean, do I?"

"You really don't care for the shape-shifting, do you?" he asked with mild surprise. "I would have thought you'd prefer not to have to put up with the real me if you didn't have to." after all, she hated him, didn't she?

"I don't like lying. It reminds me too much of my father and all the bull I had to put up with. I like it when people are up front and tell the truth." She said, shaking her head slightly as a bit of her Texan accent slipped out. "That goes for me too. Don't ask me something you don't want an honest answer to. And make sure you think about the wording too. I'll answer what you ask. Nothing more, nothing less."
Dec. 8th, 2009 05:57 am (UTC)
"I understand that at least. It must make things very difficult for you, unable to be completely honest, always starting anew," he shrugged softly. "But I have a cash card for my own use. I'm not much of a fan of living as my alter ego, either. So, shall we?" The front door opened automatically as Sylar lead the way to the parking garage.

Claire was more than excited to get out and see what she'd missed. She loved staying up with current events and the new technology. It was one of the things that kept her sane while she watched the world live and die around her.

She trotted quietly behind Sylar, unaware of what car they were headed for. "So, I never asked. What city are we in? And what's the date to be precise? I know I've been out for a couple of years, I just don't know exactly. Was it more than one? More than five? Sorry..." She finally stopped. "I'm rambling."
Dec. 8th, 2009 06:22 am (UTC)
"I don't know when they got you, but it's twenty-one-ten, now, May nineteenth," Sylar answered, leading the way to a sleek black vehicle that opened for them and take them automatically to their desired destination. "And we're in New York, though we were in Washington before. I think they brought me there because they already had fascilities for immortals there."

He shook it off and ushered her in before joining, glad to have this excuse to get out of the house. He spent entirely too much time indoors with his music collection and his reading tablet.
Dec. 8th, 2009 06:31 am (UTC)
"I missed my one-hundred and twentieth birthday. Damn them." Claire frowned, leaning back so that the auto-buckle could fasten her in. "I always look forward to the big round numbers." She explained with a giant grin. "Guess I'm just going to have to wait another decade. Oh well."
Dec. 8th, 2009 06:41 am (UTC)
Sylar chuckled softly. "I suppose so, but with the shopping spree and spa day you're about to have maybe that can make up for it a bit?" He figured a mani-pedi was also in order for a girl like Claire. Hers were a little ling but had probably stopped growing soon into her comatose state, ailing as they'd kept the poor girl's body.
Dec. 8th, 2009 06:44 am (UTC)
"And what are you going to do while I get a prettied up, hmm?" Claire asked, smiling as Sylar pointed out that she was going to get some pampering. She was more than looking forward to it.
Dec. 8th, 2009 06:56 am (UTC)
"Oh, I don't know. A massage perhaps. I could use a bit of pampering of my own." It took mere moments to reach the shopplex, a shimmering white tower of boutiques, cafes and services. Everything shown bright and clean inside and it was obvious Sylar wasn't skimping on the quality of the establishment. It wasn't that he was trying to buy Claire, he just had money, and no problem spending it.
Dec. 8th, 2009 06:59 am (UTC)
"Wow..." Claire looked around with a sort of awed look. "I've never been in one of these places." She said, her voice slightly quiet. To be honest, she kept up appearances well enough, but it was really hard for the poor blond to maintain a cash income. Unlike Sylar, she couldn't change how she looked, so after a couple of years at a job, she would have to vanish and become a new person with a new job. That left little on her cash card most of the time. "Where to first?"
Dec. 8th, 2009 07:12 am (UTC)
"The salon I think. Not to be cruel, it's not your fault Shenoy doesn't deep condition," he winked and lead the way to a full-service salon-spa that still accepted walk-ins. "I'll let you pick out whatever services you want," he told Claire, then to the receptionist said, "Everything can just be charged on this card." He'd also let her explain, or not, anything she felt needed to be, or not. She now at least looked healthier and happier, so he wasn't as concerned about worried strangers interfering.
Dec. 8th, 2009 07:23 am (UTC)
The woman at the counter looked at the girl expectantly and Claire just sort of stared at the board. Once the blond looked over at the woman, who still looked slightly concerned for the girl, Claire realized how this must have looked.

"I just got out of the hospital." She said, a smile on her face. "I had Crohn's disease, but I was able to get a new life thanks to Shenoy."

"Oh, poor dear." The woman said, responding to those words like a mother responds to a crying baby. "No wonder you look so run down. C'mon. Let's get you fixed up."

The woman led Claire away from Sylar and the blond turned to wink and wave before she was sat in a hairdresser's chair, the woman from the desk explaining to the hairdresser what was happening.
Dec. 8th, 2009 07:36 am (UTC)
Sylar rolled his eyes slightly and smirked at the lie. Apparently Claire wasn't above falsehood when necessary and while she got a fresh cut and whatever else she wanted to feel refeshed and presentable, Sylar got acquainted with some hot stones and skilled hands in a massage room toward the back. After the last few days he'd had, some unwinding was in order.
Dec. 8th, 2009 08:12 am (UTC)
They were both there for a good while. Claire got her hair and nails done, as well as having some make-up applied. She decided she would take the brand they were using, since Sylar was buying after all.

When the blond was done, she was looking almost like her old self. Albeit she was still a little too thin, she looked amazing. She could have gotten away with being a model. She didn't really notice, but she was now turning a few heads. What she did notice was her reflection and what she saw made her smile bright as the sun. She looked good and that made her feel infinitely better.
Dec. 8th, 2009 08:20 am (UTC)
Sylar noticed. He came back out to find a transformation had occured, Claire once again shining with perfection. "Wow..." he couldn't help but utter something as he took the sight in, the way she glittered like sunlight incarnate. "You look amazing," he admitted, once he got his words back.
Dec. 8th, 2009 08:24 am (UTC)
"Uh... thanks..." Claire's smile flickered a little, but not with disgust, more confusion and modesty. It was one thing for boys to notice her... it was another thing for Sylar to notice her.

The once cheerleading daughter of an agent knew that she had appeal. The day at the spa had brought back almost all of that confidence. The only chick in her armor was that she thought she needed a hamburger like woah.
Dec. 8th, 2009 08:31 am (UTC)
"Sorry," he almost blushed a little and laughed at himself a bit. "Alright. What's next? Do we navigate the murky, lacy sea that is women's intimates?" he asked as he headed for the front desk to pay the totalled amount and add a generous tip. They'd done a damn good job and well deserved it.
Dec. 8th, 2009 08:38 am (UTC)
"Okay." Claire nodded softly a small giggle followed the look the woman gave them when overhearing what they'd be doing next. Sex wasn't such a taboo thing anymore, but there were certainly some older folks who still thought that such things should be kept private.

As they walked, Claire watched Sylar. She never had a chance to observe him until now. Finally, she had to say something.

"You know, people can see that you're staring at them. They do have eyes." She laughed, pulling at the brunette's elbow to regain his focus.
Dec. 8th, 2009 08:55 am (UTC)
"Hm?" Sylar looked back down at her, still so fresh and glowing. "I watch people. They like to come to this sort of place to show off anyway, why shouldn't I look?" He was still and ever mystified by people. He understood a lit, conseptually, but he still didn't get them as well as he did machines. Not to mention he often felt stared at himself.
Dec. 8th, 2009 08:59 am (UTC)
"Yeah, but you can't just ogle them like you're at a people zoo." Claire laughed, pulling him into a nearby store. "People watching is a pastime, not an addiction. You look scary when you watch people. If you're going to stare at the ladies, smile. Hell, smile at the men too. People love other people who smile at them. And you look handsome when you smile, which will make you infinitely less creepy." As Claire explained, she started looking through the drawers of undergarments, never liking anything boring. She liked color and this store had plenty of it.
