The Sixth Extinction

Character(s): Gabriel "Sylar" Gray and Claire Bennet
Summary: Building 26 is never shut down. No one convinces the president that it's best to just drop the matter of evolved humans, and Danko is given cart blanche to deal with the super-powered threat as he sees fit. In the next century the Evolved are hunted to the brink of extinction, either out-right exterminated, or imprisoned and exploited for their ability. The number of specials used in this way grows fewer and fewer as time and mishaps progress, but one type is still coveted above all. Exterminating a regenerator is exceedingly difficult, anyway...
Status: In progress/PRIVATE

Sylar didn't really laugh along with. He knew about the boy and his ability but his mind had beendrawn back, decades. He was still wondering about the child, Noah, who might have been and wasn't. It didn't hit him as hard as it would have, nearer to the lost opportunity, but still a certain regret stirred inside him. "Nakamura. I don't suppose you've seen him popping through the timeline recently?"
Dec. 7th, 2009 04:30 pm (UTC)
"No. You?" Claire asked, almost a little too hopefully.
Dec. 7th, 2009 09:32 pm (UTC)
"No," Sylar answered with a disappointed sigh. "I always keep my eyes up and earto the ground, expecting him to comesee this travesty and declare it must be changed, but so far, nothing."
Dec. 7th, 2009 09:36 pm (UTC)
"I don't think either of them, Peter or Hiro, jumped this far ahead." Claire shook her head, the disappointment completely understood. "If they did, I think they would have tried to fix it. Extinction is a terrible thing to face, especially if it was your own kind. Now i kind of know how the new Spock felt."

"Did you just make a Star Trek reference?" Sylar squinted at Claire incredulously, not expecting sci-fi would really be her thing, especially not something like Star Trek. Star Wars maybe, but not the more elegant tales of the Federation.

"I... uh... no! You didn't hear that! If word got out that I knew the reason Klingons looked normal in the original series was because of the eugenics wars, my life as a popular girl would be over." Claire pretended to panic, giggling slightly in her overacting.
Dec. 7th, 2009 10:12 pm (UTC)
"Haha! If only they'd had star ship big enough in the early 21st century, they could have shipped us all off on the Botany Bay instead of laying us to waste," he shook his head, chuckling at the silly idea. Eventually one had to have a sense of humor about even the darkest of things.

"Right. And then in some distant future, when we're all unfrozen, some star captain will be screaming 'SYLAR!' at the top of his lungs in tribute to William Shatner." Claire laughed, unable to contain her geek knowledge. She was best friends with one as a kid. They did have a lot in common.

"Bot I refuse to do original-Khan's huge bangs. That style is not coming back, not on my account anyway," he shook his headstill laughing warmly.
Dec. 7th, 2009 10:44 pm (UTC)
"Like you never had bad hair." Claire scoffed, rolling her eyes. "I do remember you looking like a greasy italian for most of my college years." She laughed, scrunching up her nose.

"I was rebelling against the old clean-cut me and the involuntary haircut your dad had his goons give me at Primatech," he rolled his eyes a bit. "But the tendency for it to fall in my eyes convinced me against it, eventually," Sylar ran a hand over the short fuzz he had now, silently bemoaning the loss of what little length he'd had before this.
Dec. 7th, 2009 11:04 pm (UTC)
"I don't care much for the military either." Claire pointed out, not knowing that Sylar didn't have a choice in the matter. Shenoy had just left her be, her hair growing much longer than even she was used to.

"But speaking of hair, I need mine cut, badly." She held up one of her curly, golden locks, the split ends beyond evident.
Dec. 8th, 2009 01:14 am (UTC)
"Hush, it'll grow back out," Sylar scowled softly, rubbing the back of his head again, then frowning at her split ends. "They let your hair get so brittle, it's no wonder. They really ought to have taken better care. A hero like you I'm sure they could have talked into the occassional voluntary donation."
Dec. 8th, 2009 01:58 am (UTC)
"No matter." Claire shook her head and gave Sylar her best and most winning smile to date. "When I'm feeling better, I'll just have to go get a nice cut and shine." She grinned, standing and pacing close to him before running her hand over the fuzz on the brunette's scalp.

"And I get to call you fuzzy wuzzy until then." She giggled, heading to the bedroom, deciding a proper shower would also make her feel better about herself.

"Oh, hell no, you don't," Sylar denied, flinching out from under her hand as she trailed away. "I had a very respectable cut before the goon squad nabbed me. This is not my fault," hecontinued to insist as she walked away, sighing as he realized it wasn't going to do any good. But she was joking around with him and that was a good sign. He allowed himself a small smile when she was out of sight, privately glad they weren't fighting any more. It might not last, but for now anyway, things were calm.

Upon steeping in front of the mirror, Claire frowned, but was not completely displeased. She still look grossly thin, but her skin was flushed and healthy. Perhaps she should get her hair cut sooner. They could always explain her appearance to having a terrible disease that made her so thin and that she was now getting back on her feet. Yeah, that would work. Until then, she stripped down, tossing Sylar's worn clothes in what appeared to the the laundry hamper and pulled another towel off the linen shelf, wrapping herself in it and trotting off to the bathroom.

Once the door was shut, the towel was hung and the water programed to her favorite temperature, which the computers always said was too hot, but Claire Bennet never got burned. And once underneath the heated spray, she felt better than she had in years. This was once thing she liked about living this long. She lived to see water that never went cold. She could have remained in the shower for days and the spray would have never lost its heat.

Washing herself was a little uncomfortable, realizing that hair had grown and overgrown in places that she was none to pleased about. She dispensed a second razor from Sylar's collection, sure that the man wouldn't mind that she'd taken her own and went about shaving anything that should be and... trimming everything else.

Once her hair was washed, legs and arms and other areas cleaned up and body thoroughly rinsed, Claire stepped out of the shower feeling so much better than she had when she stepped in. It was then she realized she had no clothes.

"Great." She sighed and towel-dried her hair before wrapping the cotton fabric around her tiny body and stepping out into the bedroom. "Sylar? May I borrow another t-shirt?" She called out to him. "And could I possibly send you on an errand?"

"Hmm? Oh, sure," the brunette went to his dresser and grabbed another set of his bedclothes for her, handing them off through the door. "I'm guessing you'd like some things more your size and style?" He asked, leaning himself against the wall as he waited for her to change.
Dec. 8th, 2009 02:41 am (UTC)
"Actually," Claire began as she popped back out of the bathroom, fully dressed. "Until I've gained more weight and such, I really don't mind the pajamas. No sense in wasting money... but..." The blond trailed off, looking away. Her cheeks flushed in mild embarrassment before she smiled and looked back up at Sylar. "I really would like a couple of bras and underwear. At least the underwear. I've always hated going comando."
Dec. 8th, 2009 03:03 am (UTC)
Sylar smiled good-naturedly at her embarrassment and nodded, standing away from the wall again. "Sure. I can handle that. What size should I pick up? It's, ahh, not really something I've shopped for, before." he scratched the back of his head self-consciously, aware that undergarments came in a myriad of sizes and fabrics which, in spite of his usual I-can-do-anything attitude was slightly daunting.
Dec. 8th, 2009 03:07 am (UTC)
"I should probably go with you because I knew two years ago. Now, not so much." She smiled, glad he didn't make it more awkward.

"And you've never gone lingerie shopping with a lady? Really?" Not too shocking that Sylar wasn't a normal guy who went to Victoria's Secret for panties with his girl, but he'd honestly never taken part in that once? Not in one hundred some odd years?
Dec. 8th, 2009 03:18 am (UTC)
"See? You girls always have this attitude like it's not that hard, but you've been wearing these things your whole lives and have had mothers before you to show you how it all works, but for us guys? It's this enigmatic mystery. All the different cuts and cups and straps and fabrics. And it's only gotten worse with time. They just invent more variations!" he scoffed.
Dec. 8th, 2009 03:23 am (UTC)
"Well, don't get me started on the men's pants thing. Why are there two numbers? Why can't you be normal and just have sizes like us? Or why can't we be special enough to have length too?" Claire hit back, giving the brunette a faux sneer.
Dec. 8th, 2009 03:46 am (UTC)
"I don't know but it's why I never gift in clothing. Necklaces fit anyone and seem to be better appreciated anyway," Sylar pointed out. "Not that it helps right now."

He looked her up and down once, still looking too much like a hospital patient to really go out and about without drawing unwanted eyes. He knew better than to say as much this time, but he had an idea to get around it. "Wait here a moment."

Just a few doors down he had a neighbor who was pretty much model thin and all he needed to do was concoct a story about his visiting neice's lost luggage (Claire could cuss him out later if she wanted) and he managed to procure a dress and a pair of flats for her to borrow whilst they shopped for replacements.

"A little more presentable than my pyjamas," he said as he presented her with the garments.
Dec. 8th, 2009 03:54 am (UTC)
Claire took the dress and shoes, for a moment unable to say anything really. She had followed him to his front door and waited with curiosity. When he returned and gave her a pretty nice dress and adorable flats, she became speechless.

"Where did you..." But she trailed off, not really caring if he stole them or not. She had to sink that low a few times over the years. "Thank you." She finally stated, grinning and going to change.

It surprised Sylar, the warm sort of feeling that the light in her eyes made him feel. Sometimes he wasn't entirely sure why he was doing this himself. She had always been special in his eyes, different from the others, and then there was the time spent believing that he was Nathan Petrelli. He still carried memories that weren't his own and some of those included Claire, though not enough to make him feel too awkward about her. But maybe some of the protectiveness found it's roots in those old thoughts. "How is it?" he asked through the door, once he thought she was probably dressed.
