The Sixth Extinction

Character(s): Gabriel "Sylar" Gray and Claire Bennet
Summary: Building 26 is never shut down. No one convinces the president that it's best to just drop the matter of evolved humans, and Danko is given cart blanche to deal with the super-powered threat as he sees fit. In the next century the Evolved are hunted to the brink of extinction, either out-right exterminated, or imprisoned and exploited for their ability. The number of specials used in this way grows fewer and fewer as time and mishaps progress, but one type is still coveted above all. Exterminating a regenerator is exceedingly difficult, anyway...
Status: In progress/PRIVATE

"Actually, you are the easiest person to talk to in years, and I think that's saying something about the company I keep." Claire frowned. "It honestly depends on who I'm talking to and 'en vogue' is so not sitzin'." She smiled and winked, slipping into a more common way of speaking for their current era. "I usually get told I sound really smart."

"Augh, I can't stand modern slang! I'm eternally twenty-seven and still I
an old curmudgeon. Everyone guesses older once they start talking with me, but of course they're still decades off," he shook his head slightly. "That more than anything makes connecting so hard. Closest Ive come recently was the antique dealer who figured me out." And that drew another frown.
Dec. 5th, 2009 09:35 am (UTC)
"Antiques?" She raised a brow. "What were you into antiques for? Trying to relive the good ol' days?" Of course, Claire had no idea who Sylar or Gabriel Gray was. She didn't know his affinity for things, watches especially. "I got hit by a cop car. Awful, huh?"
Dec. 5th, 2009 09:58 am (UTC)
"That is the shittiest luck in the entire world. Indestructible and you still have to look both ways wiu an even more paranoid efficiency than the mortal," he scoffed. "I'm not quite sure what it was that tipped her off. Maybe I just looked at things with too much nostaligia. All I know is that I was surrounded before I could have anticipated a d some punk bastard got in a lucky shot."
Dec. 5th, 2009 03:42 pm (UTC)
"Lucky shot? Hmm?" Claire smiled. "How lucky?"
Dec. 5th, 2009 08:00 pm (UTC)
"Metal spike to the back of my skull lucky," Sylar scowled, sipping his tea again to soothe his wounded pride.
Dec. 5th, 2009 08:03 pm (UTC)
"I thought that didn't work anymore on you." Claire pointed out, getting up on her own to retrieve the apple juice from the fridge and refilling her glass. It was nice to be able to walk again. "Didn't my dad try to take you down that way once?"
Dec. 5th, 2009 11:25 pm (UTC)
"I can only shift a vital part of my brain so very far. Which is why it was a damn lucky shot. Either hat intel was passed on and they were guessing or the guy who did it thought he'd fucked everything up, only to win the day. They neglected to take into account the ineffectiveness of most drugs on my system," he smirked at the last, always able to overcome. "Considering they won't allow for the possibilty of another Hatian luck is about their only hope."
Dec. 5th, 2009 11:32 pm (UTC)
"I've heard rumors that another person with Rene's ability might actually exist." Claire said, sitting back down with her juice. "I've also heard that there's a secret underground rebellion of specials, hitting the government here and there. Haven't met a single one and honestly, I think all that's left are regenerators. They've done well to filter out the gene for the past century."
Dec. 5th, 2009 11:39 pm (UTC)
"At this stage I imagine any word of rebellion is either a scare tactic to keep the public cool with the outcome of the genetics wars or a ploy to cull anyone who slipped through their fingers. It'd be pretty tempting to go look for others if there was any proof of them," Sylar reasoned. "And if I'm wrong, well, I don't suspect our chances of repopulating are good anyway."
Dec. 5th, 2009 11:42 pm (UTC)
"All you need are two viable gene carriers. Any children they have could essentially start all of this over again." Of course, Claire wasn't really considered herself and Sylar in that category. If she did, those terribly embarrassing and incriminating words would have never come out of her pretty, albeit thin mouth.
Dec. 5th, 2009 11:52 pm (UTC)
Sylar quirked a brow at her interesting choice of words, stretching out his legs off to the side and crossing his ankles. "I suppose so. But why would anyone want to? All it would do is begin the wars again at the most successful, and at the least get the poor kids shot."
Dec. 6th, 2009 12:00 am (UTC)
"But what if they were protected. Taught to keep quiet? It doesn't matter if they're famous, only that the gene doesn't die." Claire actually felt a bit of loyalty to her kind, feeling that they shouldn't just get wiped out from the planet for being different. "I mean, extinction is a terrible thing. They can save the whales, but they can't save the people?"
Dec. 6th, 2009 04:09 am (UTC)
"The people didn't want to save us," Sylar shook his head, frowning more deeply. "And if I remember correctly, populating the world with us was going to bring about it's end. Isn't that what Peter said he saw? Nature tested out our kind and found us lacking I suppose. But if you're hellbent on little ones someday, I wish you luck finding another carrier." She'd made it clear already that she wasn't considering him, though as ever he wasn't taking that as her final answer, not really.
Dec. 6th, 2009 05:11 am (UTC)
The fact that Sylar was even interested in perhaps... copulating... with her had never crossed Claire's mind. They were two people who were traveling the same road going to different destinations. Not to mention she hated him.

"I don't know if I want kids. Given the parenting that I received, I'm a little worried about how I'd treat my own." She didn't want to become a morally grey parent like her father.
Dec. 6th, 2009 05:24 am (UTC)
"You don't think you could learn from your father's mistakes and raise the next generation better for it? I know if I had a life dependent on me I'd never put a kid through the sort of demands and repression I went through," he didn't sound like he really expected to ever find himself a fathr though. Just a big 'what if' that happened to go with the conversation.
Dec. 6th, 2009 05:36 am (UTC)
"Peter said that you made a good father, strangely enough." Claire said, finishing off her second glass of juice before calling it quits. "He went to that weirdo future where I was a badass and Nathan was a prick... but you...? You were normal. You had a son. Peter said it creeped him out a bit."
Dec. 6th, 2009 08:45 am (UTC)
"...what?" Sylar scoffed softly, looking at her with a severe distrust in his dark eyes. It was such a random thing to say, an impossible possibility but Peter had told him about a future where he had mastered the Hunger. Once upon a time. "What are you talking about?" he almost laughed at the idea.
Dec. 6th, 2009 09:18 am (UTC)
"Yeah. He said something like a four-year-old. You were making pancakes or something for him." Claire smiled and nodded. "You were actually really concerned that your son would learn of your powers. You didn't want to scare him. Kinda sweet if you ask me." The blond continued, standing to put her glass in the autowash before making her way back to the living area, a comfy couch much more suitable for her boney butt.

"The only thing that I thought was really weird was that you named your son Noah." Like Noah Bennet, which Claire didn't buy for a heartbeat. Sylar would never name one of his children after her father. Never.
Dec. 7th, 2009 03:28 am (UTC)
"That's... So bizarre," Sylar knew she wasn't lying, not about any of it, and that was so strange because he couldn't imagine why he'd choose that name unless, "Something must have happened that never happened. He must have changed his mind and helped me... And then that never came to be." he sounded quietly disappointed in that lost possibility as he rose to join her in the living room.
Dec. 7th, 2009 03:34 am (UTC)
"My dad said he never intended on helping you. He hunted you until the day he died, remember?" Claire pointed out, her father chasing Sylar until his hair was almost entirely grey. "I think it was something else, not sure what though." The blond shook her head.

"The story goes Knox ended up killing little Noah, driving you off the deep end and blowing up half of California. Peter said you lived in my old house in Costa Verde. Even had one of my mom's show dogs. A pom." She shrugged. "The image in my head is kinda cute. You wearing a pair of black-rimmed glasses, making waffles for your kid. Just... so not you." She laughed, actually enjoying the image.
Dec. 7th, 2009 03:49 am (UTC)
"No, not any more," he frowned again seating himself a little heavily. "I suppose it's best it didn't turn out that way though, if all it amounted to was that I lost him. We would lose just about any of them though. We'd outlive any children."
Dec. 7th, 2009 04:12 am (UTC)
"Unless they had our ability. If we actually pass it on. It's happened with a few people. Matt Parkman and his father shared the same ability." She could only hope that her children would live forever like she would. The idea that she would have to watch her children age and die was certainly off-putting.
Dec. 7th, 2009 05:41 am (UTC)
"It was the same in my family, but it's really the luck of the draw. So many others are more like your family. Peter and Aurthur came closest to sharing an ability there, and still there was a distinctive difference," he reasoned.
Dec. 7th, 2009 06:20 am (UTC)
"And Matty Jay had a completely different ability than Matt. What did Hiro call him?" Claire smiled, trying to remember. "Oh yeah! Baby touch and go."
