The Sixth Extinction

Character(s): Gabriel "Sylar" Gray and Claire Bennet
Summary: Building 26 is never shut down. No one convinces the president that it's best to just drop the matter of evolved humans, and Danko is given cart blanche to deal with the super-powered threat as he sees fit. In the next century the Evolved are hunted to the brink of extinction, either out-right exterminated, or imprisoned and exploited for their ability. The number of specials used in this way grows fewer and fewer as time and mishaps progress, but one type is still coveted above all. Exterminating a regenerator is exceedingly difficult, anyway...
Status: In progress/PRIVATE

"Mohinder, stop it. We're not freaks!" Sylar spoke a bit sharply, but her couldn't help it. He didn't like attention being drawn to his abnormality unless it was good and positive. Being called a freak, even if it was a collective evaluation and not meant to be personal, was upsetting.

"Ask them." Mohinder cried. "Ask them what we are. They'll agree. I've sinned so terribly and this is the price I pay." Of course, the doctor was forgetting that Claire and Sylar were in the same place, the former cheerleader having done nothing wrong to live such a tough existence.

"Oh, spare me!" Sylar snarled, patently offended that Mohinder thought himself such a sinner with the Intuitive rigt there, literally casting his shadow over the shorter man. He seized Mohinder by the shoulders and herded him into the nearest seat, sitting him down like a parent with a bawling child. "Now, settle down. We will be fine, even if Shenoy is on their way now, which they're not. But you did make this choice for yourself, so quit these hysterics and deal with the life you have in front of you."

Mohinder's eyes went wide and he just stared at the brunette. There was a conflict of emotion going on behind those glossy brown orbs. He wasn't sure if he should keep crying or lash out. Both emotions fought for dominance on the Indian's face as he just continued to gape at Sylar.

Eventually, after a moment of gripping the chair he was in hard enough to crack the frame, the doctor took the tall brunette's advice and settled.

"I'm sorry." He said quietly, sniffling softly. "I lost myself there for a second." The words came out sounding a bit numb, Mohinder's eyes searching the floor rather than Sylar's face. "Sometimes, I don't know what I'm saying. I'm sorry."

"It's okay," Sylar sighed and moved one hand up to the doctor's shoulder, more friendly again. "I know it's hard, but you can't lose your head. There's no need to, for one. I'm here. I'll keep us safe if something happens, it's just best if it doesn't, you know?"

"I lost my head a long time ago." Mohinder sighed. "And sometimes... Sometimes I don't think I'll ever find it again."

"Do you want to talk? Remember, I spent most of my early years nutty as a fruit cake, so you don't have to worry about me judging you if you're feeling frayed around the edges," he touched the doctor's hair softly, feeling horribly uncomfortable, but willing to do anything it took to keep Mohinder there with them.

"It's just, sometimes I feel like I have a giant puzzle, but I'm missing all the edges." Mohinder shook his head, rubbing his head against Sylar's fingers. "And none of the middle pieces fit proper so it's all just a big mess on the table..." The doctor sighed, raising his eyes to look at Sylar's face with a sad smile. "Ya know?"

"I do know. I'm sorry you feel that way," he pulled up a second chair, sitting very near the doctor, reaching out to hold one of his hands, loose enough that Mohinder could escape the hold if he needed. "And I'm sorry that nostalgia is so dangerous. I know it can be such a bittersweet comfort. Very much so."

Mohinder took that hand and smiled a little brighter. "You really are a friend, huh?" He let out a soft chuckle. "You'd stick around even when all the dark bits start leaking out."

"Mohinder, as long as you don't stick a blade in the wrong bit of my brain, and good luck finding it, there's nothing you could do that would make me leave. No antiquarian in the world could come up with something as vital to my past as you," Sylar returned that sad smile from before. "If you need to let out any of that crazy getting pent up in there, I will listen, I will talk you through, and I can take the beating, if need be."

"You never know," The Indian smiled sinisterly. "One day you might just hit the right nerve and I'll start looking for that spot."

"If you don't get it on the first go I'll make you sincerely regret the attempt," Sylar warned. "Just so you know, I'm no longer a megalomaniac, but I'm no pussy cat either. But youre not going to break me, Mohinder. You don't have to be afraid of being who and what you are here."

"Oh, I forgot who I was a very long time ago." Mohinder frowned, all the humor now gone. "Perhaps... Maybe you and Claire can help me? Help me remember who I am?" The doctor's eyes searched the brunette's, glossing over once again.

"Of course we will, if that's what you want," Sylar squeezed Mohinder's hand, gently. "But it's been a long time. We're all different people, in some ways. You'll need to take everything that's happened and make that part of yourself, too. Like 'Dogma', y'know? Did you ever see that film?"

"I'm not the grand-niece of Christ." Mohinder said flatly. "I'm the son of Judas and I've been through Hell on earth."

"Be that as it may, the principle still applies," Sylar ran the pad of his thumb over the back of his hand. "But keep in mind, you're talking to the Devil himself, so I know a thing or two about Hell and betrayal. You're in nonjudgmental company."

"Ha! True." The Indian barked out a laugh, his smile peeking through those threatening tears. "I certainly couldn't ua e chosen a better mate to confess myself to." Mohinder chuckled. "Shiva will take you to paradise only out of fear of what you would do if he brought you to perdition."

"Take perdition over. Then conquer paradise," Sylar smirked, but again, kept his personal views to himself. If he ever managed death he didn't expect any sort of afterlife from it. "Maybe build a harem after that. I don't know what else you do with paradise."

"You be happy." Mohinder sighed, petting at Sylar's hand. "And at peace." The doctor's eyes took on a lost look, as if the Indian was suddenly deep in thought. "What I wouldn't give to be at peace."

"You can try for a living peace here. Maybe you should devote time to religious and philosophical pursuits? Meditate, maybe. Work out some of your puzzle pieces and let me concern myself with keeping you warm, fed and safe," Sylar suggested, seriously. Personally he didn't know what he'd do with out a bit of chaos and struggle, but he was well aware of the stark contrasts between himself and Mohinder.

"I am not a very religious man." The doctor shook his head. "Especially after all that I've seen." Mohinder turned his focus back onto Sylar and smiled. "But I suppose revisiting my fate couldn't hurt. Perhaps meditation, some time to focus, would be beneficial."

"If you like, but don't let me twist your arm," Sylar warned. "I'm not trying to quiet you for my own convenience, okay? I've just… lost my taste for seeing you suffer."

"Well, it's going to be a long time for me to get myself to a place where I may be alright." Mohinder smiled. "Maybe." The Indian held Sylar's hand for a long moment before letting go and pulling away. "I'm sorry you have to deal with my madness. I promise I'll try harder. I'll try to get myself back. I promise."

"Claire and I will be here for you all the while. Apologies in advance if we're a bit annoying, we just like you is all," Sylar smirked, running the pad of his thumb over his own empty fingertips absently.
