The Sixth Extinction

Character(s): Gabriel "Sylar" Gray and Claire Bennet
Summary: Building 26 is never shut down. No one convinces the president that it's best to just drop the matter of evolved humans, and Danko is given cart blanche to deal with the super-powered threat as he sees fit. In the next century the Evolved are hunted to the brink of extinction, either out-right exterminated, or imprisoned and exploited for their ability. The number of specials used in this way grows fewer and fewer as time and mishaps progress, but one type is still coveted above all. Exterminating a regenerator is exceedingly difficult, anyway...
Status: In progress/PRIVATE

Mohinder gave a sheepish smile, eventually sitting back down and sighing.

"And you're Gabriel 'Sylar' Gray. You remember my father and chai tea. And she is Claire Bennet. She remembers the battle within the resistance and the war that nearly tore the our world apart. You're both very special to me." The Indian grinned, the expression still very small and slightly restrained. "I've miss you two as much as I have everyone else. Honestly."

Tears slipped. Unbidden, but unrestrainable, sliding over the ragged scrap of his eyelashes and falling an inch or two before hitting his skin.

Sylar did not cry often. Tears were generally reserved for the most intense, unbearable pain. He immediately moved to wipe the moisture away, sighing tightly. "I haven't felt like this in years. I've spent decades, numb, hiding behind masks, no good reason for living, just no other choice than to keep on with it. All my own fault, of course.

"It's all different now, and it hurts like crazy... and I love it," he laughed weakly. "I feel like I'm stealing my life back from Shenoy. I don't want to lose a single piece of that."
Oct. 1st, 2010 02:16 am (UTC)
"Then I'll stay." Mohinder sighed, again his expression reserved. "If it means that much to you that I be here, than I'll stay." He reached out and touch the brunette's damp cheek. "I can't promise everything will be alright, but I can promise that I'll try."
Oct. 1st, 2010 02:35 am (UTC)
"That's what I want, just try," he leaned into the touch, just a bit. This was definitely important to him, extremely, but it was starting to go to a dark place.

Killing the people at D.C. Shenoy and taking Claire had been a fluke. The slaughter in Los Angeles, finding Mohinder, it was taking him back into a dangerous past. But like before, he did his best to keep that silent, hidden from those around him.

Maybe he could put the genie back in the bottle. It wasn't like there was really anyone else left to rescue, right?

Not that anyone was aware of. From what the doctor knew, he Sylar and Claire were it from that generation of people.

"So what now?" Mohinder asked, frowning a bit. "Do we talk to Claire?" He wanted the girl to be in on the discussion. The Indian was sure she already felt the boys club forming. Mohinder didn't want to push her away, by no means.
Oct. 1st, 2010 08:49 am (UTC)
"Yes, we should talk to Claire. Soon as she gets back, which shouldn't be too long from now. And... Look, I'm sorry about the 'gay' comment. It came out entirely wrong, and I sounded like a total jerk. I'm fine with hugging, and if you want to lean on me, or let me lean on you, and the hand-holding and whatever..." he looked up at the ceiling, embarrassed, blushing a bit, and sighed.

Truth be told, it had been a cheap excuse as to why he couldn't give Mohinder the intimacy he craved, trying to get his relationship with Claire out of the line of fire, but he didn't know how to admit that without messing it up and coming off like a jerk again. "I'm just an idiot sometimes. I'm sorry."
Oct. 1st, 2010 01:10 pm (UTC)
"Do I come off as gay?" Mohinder asked, curious now that things had calmed down a bit.
Oct. 1st, 2010 06:22 pm (UTC)
The question hit Sylar like a ton of bricks. The colour crawled up his neck and face immediately, a deep blush as he suddenly realized he'd drawn what was probably a wrong conclusion, due to reminiscing with Claire about Mohinder, added to the progression of a conversation held wandering about the previous night.

"I thought... When you talked about Nadir..."

Oh, boy! This was embarrassing! The whole situation had seemed to be about lovers, the inability to have them, and now Sylar was getting a clearer picture that Mohinder was dangerous to people who were just friends. Not boyfriends. I mean, probably, right? Now he wasn't certain. He was thoroughly confused.
Oct. 1st, 2010 07:29 pm (UTC)
"Oh." Mohinder smiled, a bit brighter now, a bit more genuine. "Yeah, he and I we're pretty close, but not that close." The Indian chuckled lightly. "Though, there were times we were drunk enough that you'd question if we were that close." He now laughed, not only finding Sylar's notion that he might be homosexual, but the blush of embarrassment the brunette suffered when he'd realized he'd assumed too much.

"Sorry, I suppose I should have clarified." Mohinder smiled. "I suppose I did mislead you a bit when I spoke of all of my girlfriends before him. I was just trying to point out that a relationship of any kind for me was always dangerous and usually ended in tragedy. Nadir was my final attempt at human contact.

"I thought that I could at least have a good friend that I could share my life with, but that obviously failed too. Can you now see what I'm so... protective of myself? I don't want to hurt anyone, friend or otherwise." The geneticist explained more thoroughly. He hoped Sylar understood now the gravity of Mohinder's madness. He'd been denied even simple friendship as well.
Oct. 1st, 2010 07:45 pm (UTC)
He remained beet red for quite a while, nodding his understanding, though even more confused by the hints of what could have been on drunken occasions. He was going to punish Claire thoroughly for this. She was in so much trouble after worming Sylar's own potential attraction for the Indian out of him.

This had all been the product of subconscious wishful thinking, hadn't it? He didn't like that idea any better. "I'm sorry... I could happily just sink into a crack in the floor, now."
Oct. 1st, 2010 07:55 pm (UTC)
"Oh, relax. It's not a big deal." Mohinder smiled, shaking his head slightly. "I'm not offended, if that's what you're worries about." The Indian grinned. "But I do want to know, do I come off gay?"
Oct. 1st, 2010 11:19 pm (UTC)
"You are a little bit… colourful," Sylar answered carefully, using Claire's word. "But you're Indian, so… Claire keeps teasing me because I like to style hair." The brunette rolled his eyes.
Oct. 2nd, 2010 02:24 am (UTC)
"Colorful?" That made Mohinder laugh even harder. "Than I guess I shouldn't tell you pink is my favorite color, hmm?" He chuckled. "Than you'll really think I'm a fairy." Now the Indian couldn't contain himself. He was now laughing so hard that his side hurt.
Oct. 2nd, 2010 02:53 am (UTC)
Sylar was now blushing magenta. "Look, I'm sorry I made an assumtion. Really sorry," though more so for himself now. "You can like pink, it's just light red!"
Oct. 2nd, 2010 03:21 am (UTC)
"Very true." Mohinder laughed, leaning back on his elbows, displaying a comfortable posture now.

The door clicked and Claire walked in, slightly worries that she might walk in on a fight, but once she took in both Mohinder's face and Sylar's blush, she was terribly curious of what happened while she went out.

"And what are you boys laughing about?" She asked, a smile on her own face, the mood infectious.

"Oh, just how Sylar thought I was gay." The Indian chuckles.

"He didn't try to make out with you, did he?" Claire asked, suddenly turning slightly serious.

"No, why?" Mohinder smiled, looking over at the blushing brunette. "Should I beware?"
Oct. 2nd, 2010 03:36 am (UTC)
"Ohmigod," Sylar held up his hands in defeat, stood up, and walked to the bathroom to splash his face in cold water. "I blame you, Claire, I want to make that clear right now. You planted the thought of Mohinder's bright colour palate in my head, and I ended up with my foot in my mouth."

His tone was playfully accusing though, not serious. He wasn't usually good at being the center of the joke, but these two were special.
Oct. 2nd, 2010 04:52 am (UTC)
"Oh, so it's your fault he thinks I'm gay. Shame on you, Claire." Mohinder teased, making sure his voice was loud enough that Sylar could hear him. Honestly, he thought the whole thing quite entertaining. He hadn't had a good laugh in so long. It was nice to fret about the silly things.
Oct. 2nd, 2010 04:55 am (UTC)
"Hey! It is SO not my fault. Don't you blame me, Mr." Claire scolded from where she was standing, her voice also raised so that the brunette could hear. "I'll have you know, Mohinder, Gabe has a bit of a thing for you, gay or not. You never know, you might have to watch out." A statement that caused Mohinder to burst out laughing again.

Of course, Claire didn't mean anything by the statement, it was just to get a rise out of Sylar. He was so cute when he was embarrassed and the former cheerleader was sure she wouldn't have much occasion to see him do so.
Oct. 2nd, 2010 05:15 am (UTC)
"OH MY-!!! Claire Bennet, you Judas!" Sylar practically swung on the door frame as he shot into it, mouth gaping as she outed him like that. "You do not have to worry about anything. I admire you, that's all."

He was bright red all over again though, and he could feel the tingle of his own lie. It was more than admiration, but he was just as smitten with Claire. It was insanely confusing, and now that he knew Mohinder didn't have an interest in men, that much more embarrassing.
Oct. 2nd, 2010 01:29 pm (UTC)
"She's just teasing you, Sylar." Mohinder said, barely able to contain himself at the point. "Though, you are cute when you blush." The doctor continued to tease, adding a wink to the statement.
Oct. 2nd, 2010 04:38 pm (UTC)
God, he loved the sound of that laugh. Mohinder had shown some reluctance in traveling with a stranger, at first, but twenty minutes into the drive he'd already begun laughing and smiling, his cautions mostly superficial back then. And 'Zane' had made sure to be charming in his supposed shyness.

Now Mohinder was laughing for him, no mask of deception between them. It felt so good, so gratifying, with Claire grinning right along, poking fun, and finally Sylar began laughing, too. So much that he had to lean against the door frame and then slide down it.

"You two are mean," he accused through the laughter, with out any real conviction at all.
Oct. 3rd, 2010 03:42 am (UTC)
The rest of the night was filled with laughter, everyone one either teasing Sylar, or joining in the fun as he teased the rest of them. It turned out to be a very good night. Everyone had a pretty good night. Probably the best night they'd all had in a very long time.

The next day brought more happiness as the trio traveled along, telling stories about their pasts. Claire told the story of her and Sylar's meeting, relaying everything about Tash and Kreiger and the move to LA that brought them to the Indian's doorstep.

"Could you believe the gall of that guy?" Claire asked, rolling while referring to Kreiger. "He was such a tool. He did wet himself though."

"Really?" Mohinder laughed, slapping his knee softly. "That must have been hilarious."
Oct. 3rd, 2010 06:59 am (UTC)
"At the time, it was just infuriating, but in retrospect, yeah, it was pretty funny," Sylar grinned, reimagining the cowardice with which Kreiger had faced the pair of immortals on that fateful day.
Oct. 4th, 2010 04:14 am (UTC)
"You really should have seen his face. I'm sure it made some story after he got out of the hospital." Claire laughed along, the newly bleached blond laughing and patting Mohinder on the knee.

"Surely." The Indian smiled, glancing down at Claire's hand, but saying nothing of it. If he was going to stay with them, he needed to get used to this kind of intimacy again.
Oct. 6th, 2010 06:23 pm (UTC)
"I hope Natasha died of fright in the telling," Sylar scowled playfully. "The whole building must be scandalized, all of them living with some of the world's most wanted fugitives and none the wiser for it. Our photos have been getting smaller in the history books, though, it's no wonder no one recognizes us these days."
