The Sixth Extinction

Character(s): Gabriel "Sylar" Gray and Claire Bennet
Summary: Building 26 is never shut down. No one convinces the president that it's best to just drop the matter of evolved humans, and Danko is given cart blanche to deal with the super-powered threat as he sees fit. In the next century the Evolved are hunted to the brink of extinction, either out-right exterminated, or imprisoned and exploited for their ability. The number of specials used in this way grows fewer and fewer as time and mishaps progress, but one type is still coveted above all. Exterminating a regenerator is exceedingly difficult, anyway...
Status: In progress/PRIVATE

"Ugh! No!" Claire sneered. "No amount of shapeshifting could ever get my standards to that depth." As true to form, the cheerleader knew exactly what buttons to push on a poor lonely freak. Problem was, Claire had no clue that that was the position on the high school hierarchy that Gabriel Gray had found himself.

She didn't know about the glasses or the poorly fitted pleated pants. She actually would have thought Sylar a cruel, though popular bully. A jock perhaps. She had no idea that he was a lonely, momma's boy, loser.

"So your brilliant idea for keeping a low profile is to admit to my neighbors that we're mortal enemies and I as much as kidnappened you?" Sylar sneered, hackles slightly raised by her tone. She really could be such an insufferable diva, so utterly ungrateful.

Her choice of words was also very poor. It was giving him a very evil idea, a very twisted game to play with her some day. It would mean committing to another shape for a while, which he didn't like to do. It always ran the risk of him losing himself inside the role again, but the thought of making Claire eat her words one day...

"No." Claire sneered back. "Can't I be your mother's best friend's daughter or something that doesn't require being nice to you in public, ever?" The snotty way she said only intensified the diva appearance. "I didn't know we needed some elaborate cover story just so that I could take a walk. What about I'm just an old friend from college you're helping get back on her feet?"
Dec. 3rd, 2009 09:37 pm (UTC)
"'Old friend' would imply you'd be nicer to me," Sylar pointed out, glowering softly at her. "I'm not the one making this complicated. I just need something to tell anyone nosy enough to ask questions, something to keep them from getting suspicious and calling the police, because they're nice, polite people around here and they'll naturally be concerned over the shocking sight of the amazing walking-twig girl if they pass her in the hall."
Dec. 3rd, 2009 09:40 pm (UTC)
"Shut up!" Claire fumed almost instantly. "You said it yourself! It's not that bad!" Though, that was a terribly blow to her self image. She thought she looked horrific and Sylar all but confirmed that truth by trying to and completely getting under her skin.

A flicker of satisfaction in his cold heart as she became so defensive. A return blow for the disgust she'd shown towards him and it was enough to get him to back off before they started a shouting match that really would draw attention.

He held up one hand, calling a truce for the moment and smiled placatingly, the icy anger in his blue eyes draining and their look warming. "Okay, okay. No, it's not, but you are still recovering. You look like some one getting better after an illness and people like to show concern. That's all."
Dec. 3rd, 2009 09:58 pm (UTC)
Claire folded her arms over her chest in a very good impression of teen pout, huffing air out through her nose and staring down away from the brunette.

"I don't need to take a walk outside. I'll just walk around the apartment." She said stiffly, really mad now and not wanting the world to see her like this. She was gross and ugly.
Dec. 3rd, 2009 11:56 pm (UTC)
"Well, there isn't much to see, but as you wish," he held out one hand to her to help her rise from the bed, a little glad he wouldn't have to parade her around and make explanations later. It was going to be enough probably explaining the shouting, but he was hoping no one would really pry into that.
Dec. 4th, 2009 04:56 am (UTC)
Claire slid her hand into Sylar's and watched him for a moment before standing up. She needed to grab ahold of his other arm and once gripped, her eyes flicked back up to meet the brunette's. She decided that she did not like this Sean person.

"Can you change back. I don't think I like this guy very much." He gave her an odd feeling.
Dec. 4th, 2009 11:03 am (UTC)
His eyebrows raised slightly at her words and a moment later Sylar stood before her once again as his true self, features rippling slightly before settling back into their proper place.

"If I didn't know better, Claire, I'd think you're trying to seduce me," he smiled slightly, his voice purring in amusement at the idea. The thing nearest and dearest to Sylar was his identity, his freedom to be himself. That she requested he do just that was both surprising (as he knew she hated him), and gratifying.
Dec. 4th, 2009 04:41 pm (UTC)
"Ew! No!" Claire cringed like a child and let go of Sylar's arm, but the moment she let go she almost fell to the floor, resulting in her leaning out with a flail of her arms and wrapping them around the brunette's middle, effectively slamming her body into his chest. With a muffled groan, she looked up at him, embarrassment bringing tears to her eyes.

"Sorry..." She whimpered, feeling like an idiot now.
Dec. 4th, 2009 08:17 pm (UTC)
"Its okay. Bound to happen, the way your legs are treating you," he soothed, being a gentleman for the moment and helping her stand back up. He had to balance the liberties he tookwith her, or she'd start ignoring him completely, he was sure. "Here, one step at a time," he put one arm behind her but held her elbow, not her body, and held her hand of the arm closest to him and aided her in taking more steady steps.
Dec. 4th, 2009 09:07 pm (UTC)
Claire just frowned and let Sylar lead her. She felt terrible about being in this position. She felt completely helpless and she wasn't too thrilled that she had to depend on the brunette. She was so close to her that she could smell him. The only time he'd ever been that close was when he was hovering over her, poking around her skull.

"Why are you doing this? Honestly?" Claire suddenly asked, wanting to know exactly what Sylar's motives were. "What do you gain from this? I won't lie when I say I enjoy hearing my name again and I do like the fact that you remember what my mother looked like, but what's in it for you?"
Dec. 4th, 2009 11:42 pm (UTC)
"Much of the same, and I think it might mean more to me than it does to you," he frowned softly, answeing as they toured the comfortably sized apartment. It was all clean, the decor fairly pale in comparison to the man who lived there. "I don't like being unknown. I spent too much time..." Insignificant, unwanted, ignored, "by myself, and then everything changed."

He sighed quietly, looking back across time. "I can pretend for a while, but I don't really like it, not any more." After the months spent assumed-to-be-dead and Nathan using his body shapeshifting had lost it's charm. He still used it, but as infrequently as he could. 'Sean' didn't go out much and traveled frequently. Sylar just used him so his own name and face didn't show up in any paperwork.

"Not to mention you're the most interesting development in my life recently. Now that we're a nearly extinct species the world has become so dull. That's really the best in explanations I can give. If I come up with anything more ambitious or sinister as I imagine you're expecting, well... I probably won't let you know, or it would defeat the point, wouldn't it?" he smiled at the last, once again the one with power and control, simply because she had no idea whether or not he was scheming.
Dec. 5th, 2009 01:49 am (UTC)
"Planning what? Killing more people? I wouldn't put it past you." Claire scoffed and rolled her eyes as he walked her around. He actually had a very nice apartment. She thought it was rather bright for what she thought his tastes would be, but it was still really nice.

"I actually like the quiet now. It's sort of a breath of fresh air. After the Genetic War, once everything died down, it was nice to be able to crawl into bed without being fully dressed, track shoes and all." She laughed, having no idea how that sounded. She had been so busy talking, that she didn't notice that she had almost been walking on her own. Sylar remained at her side for balance, but almost all of her weight was supported by herself. When she realized, she grinned from ear to ear.

"Hey! Look!" Claire laughed, giggling slightly as she stepped away from the brunette and showed that she could stand all by her lonesome. "I'm standing!" She chuckled. Her elation lasted for the rest of their little walk, even when she had to take hold of Sylar again because her muscles had grown too tired.
Dec. 5th, 2009 04:48 am (UTC)
He smiled in return, her elation momentarily infectious. He didn't think about the fact that it was based in the prospect of getting away faster. She just had an unexpectedly bright smile and he hadn't had muh occasion to see it. It made him flash back to a few rare memories that weren't really his. Something about tequila, and a necklace, but it didn't bother him the way the foreign thoughts usuall did. "Just let me know when you get hungry again and I'll fix something." it hadn't been too long, but he fgured she needed nutrients.
Dec. 5th, 2009 05:11 am (UTC)
"Do you enjoy cooking?" Claire asked randomly as Sylar led her to the couch to sit, the blond complaining that she's spend to much time in bed. "You seem to like it and so far you're not half bad." She smiled, actually liking the jovial tone at the moment. Not fighting. Loathing kept to a minimum.
Dec. 5th, 2009 05:35 am (UTC)
"Now that I'm not running for my own life most of the time I have to find other ways to fill it," he smirked and sat down kitty-corner from her. "I used to just grab whatever on the run, but I've started cooking again. It's enjoyable. A science and an art and I can do quite a bit more and much better than that porridge but I thought too much too fast wouldn't sit well."
Dec. 5th, 2009 05:52 am (UTC)
"Probably not." Claire gave a little frown. "I don't need my stomach getting angry, but something high in protein and fat would probably be a good idea." She suggested. "I honestly want to get as far away from this anorexic image as fast as I can."

Her appearance was taking a terrible tole on her emotions. The blond was seemingly more depressed every time she caught her reflection in anything shiny, which in this day and age was nearly everything.

"I feel terrible." Claire's frown deepened. The more she thought about how she looked, what Shenoy had done to her, the more depleted her expression became.
Dec. 5th, 2009 06:07 am (UTC)
"Hmmm, how about breakfast for dinner then?" Sylar smiled, thinking he knew just the thing to both fit those nutritional requirements and perk up anyone's mood.

"Fresh Belgian waffles? Eggs, any way you like them. I've got ham, bacon, or breakfast sausages." He did this often enough on a whim that he had a variety available so that he didn't get bored. "Syrup or fresh strawberries... Comfort food at its best."

He didn't try to comment on her appearance again, the diagnosis clear, so all that he was qualified to treat were the physical symptoms.
Dec. 5th, 2009 06:13 am (UTC)
A small smile took the place of the frown on Claire's face and she nodded happily. "That sounds yummy." It was something she hadn't had in a while and it always reminded her of the homemade waffles her dad made. She wouldn't tell Sylar this, being that the brunette didn't really think fondly of her father. "And I like my eggs any ol' way. Over easy is my favorite though. Nobody ever manages to make scrambled eggs the way I like them."
Dec. 5th, 2009 06:25 am (UTC)
"Mm, you should try me some time. I'm not sure what your favorite is, but I like to mix them with milk so that they're nice and light and fluffy," he folded his hands behind his head, planning out the meal, going over the ingredients he had in his kitchen in his head.
Dec. 5th, 2009 06:27 am (UTC)
"Actually," Claire smiled, "I'm weird. I like them kinda runny, ya know. Like, not quite done. I hate it when my eggs are dry. So, sunny side up or over easy usually get the vote from me." She chuckled softly, a little amused by both the conversation and how Sylar looked as he thought. "Hearing you talk about fluffy eggs is kind of funny though."
Dec. 5th, 2009 06:35 am (UTC)
"Yeah? Fluffy eggs aren't diabolical enough? Maybe deviled eggs..." he joked, rolling his dark eyes playfully. She would continue to be surprised by him, how domestic he was. He hadn't caused any major mayhem in some years, save the Shenoy building and he'd had a very, very good reason for that which even Claire wasn't condemning him for.
Dec. 5th, 2009 06:41 am (UTC)
That earned a small chuckle from her. "Not a fan, but much more fitting." Claire smiled, actually standing on her own and taking some strong steps towards the kitchen area to have a seat at the small breakfast bar. Even moving the ten feet to get there made the former cheerleader proud of herself, smiling broadly as she sat down to watch Sylar make the meal.
