The Sixth Extinction

Character(s): Gabriel "Sylar" Gray and Claire Bennet
Summary: Building 26 is never shut down. No one convinces the president that it's best to just drop the matter of evolved humans, and Danko is given cart blanche to deal with the super-powered threat as he sees fit. In the next century the Evolved are hunted to the brink of extinction, either out-right exterminated, or imprisoned and exploited for their ability. The number of specials used in this way grows fewer and fewer as time and mishaps progress, but one type is still coveted above all. Exterminating a regenerator is exceedingly difficult, anyway...
Status: In progress/PRIVATE

Claire was very careful to keep up her gothic appearance, which tended to keep most of those men away from her. 'Mama-san', which they eventually ended up calling the old Japanese lady, also tried her best to keep the men away from her. She was not a hostess and was not working on tips or commissions. The former blond was glad for that, certainly not wanting to piss off the other girls either.
Sep. 13th, 2010 02:49 am (UTC)
Claire didn't really have to worry too much about jealousy. Her care in staying away from customers and her obvious having of a boyfriend made things easy. She was often complimented on her prettiness and how handsome her beau was.

Any regulars with any ideas on the bartender also took note of her tall, dark escort and steered clear. Maybe there was still something dangerous and feral in the corner of his amber eyes the few times he felt the need to look their way. Maybe his towering height just made him imposing. Either way, they managed to stay a fairly self-contained world of their own.

A little less than a couple months into their settling in, Sylar brought a shopping bag home with a bow and a tag on it for Claire. Inside was all the accoutrement they could need to maintain their "gothic" image, and still have a fun, sunlit day on any of L.A.'s bright, warm beaches.
Sep. 13th, 2010 08:12 pm (UTC)
"The beach?" Claire lit up just like her sunny old self, pulling out a bikini and sunblock along with a gothic kitty towel. "Oh, yes please!" She laughed, jumping up to give Sylar a big hug and a happy kiss. "Let's go right now. It's early! I want sun!"
Sep. 13th, 2010 09:22 pm (UTC)
"I thought you would. No way I'd bring this in at night," he grinned and helped her pack up for the beach, driving the broad freeway out to the water.

These days, the coastlines were pristine. The world had gone through its eco-crisis in the early half of the 21st century and sorted it in the later. With the end of the war seemed to come the rejuvenation of the Earth that helped assuage some of the guilt about the bloody battles. It seemed God smiled on the results of the war.

Once at the water, Sylar laid out their beach blankets and pitched a bright red umbrella. He changed into his own black swim trunks and chased Claire into the clear blue water, wrestling her affectionately under the gentle waves and popping back up with her, hair streaming water.
Sep. 14th, 2010 03:56 am (UTC)
Claire laughed as she coughed water out of her nose, her regular bright disposition returning as they played in the water. She scowled and sneered at everyone else, but when Sylar was around, her smile was as bright as the sun.

She playfully splashed him and dove under the water, eventually schooling her brain about not needed to breath. Opening her eyes in the ocean stung at first, but eventually she was like a mermaid beneath the tides, pulling at the brunette's ankles here and there.
Sep. 14th, 2010 04:16 am (UTC)
Sylar laughed and splashed with her, diving beneath the water as well, taking to it like a fish. His long limbs and large extremities made him a natural swimmer, the two of them definitely concerning the occasional observer more than once. But they always popped back up.

On the beach they lounged and soaked up at least a little sun, though shielded often by the umbrella. The brunette had brought a little picknick for them to enjoy on the sand, including refreshing lemonade. The day was truly picturesque and near-perfect.
Sep. 14th, 2010 04:20 am (UTC)
Claire certainly thought it was perfect. She laid out and had Sylar put tanning lotion on her back, knowing that the brunette would enjoy publicly putting his hands on her. The ate and laughed, the former cheerleader delighted by the lemonade.

"You're so domestic. I love it!" She laughed, clicking her glass with his.
Sep. 14th, 2010 04:28 am (UTC)
"I enjoy it pretty well, too," he grinned and sipped the sour-sweet drink. "I still have so much free time on my hands, I can enjoy the luxury of being a house wife." He chuckled, not minding being a bit effeminate. "Though Mama-san said I'd probably make a good bouncer if I had the mind to."
Sep. 14th, 2010 04:34 am (UTC)
"You'd totally kick butt. Most of those men think you're too scary to mess with anyway." Claire chuckled, rolling over and leaning into the sun more, trying to get a little more color. She just never looked right when she was too pale. "And besides, you could always get our rent lowered even more buy working with me."
Sep. 14th, 2010 04:47 am (UTC)
"That's true," he nodded, indeed gladly massaging the lotion onto that gradually goldening skin. He knew that in spite of their dark look there were a number of young men eyeing Claire. He definitely enjoyed laying his claim to her.
Sep. 14th, 2010 04:51 am (UTC)
And Claire definitely enjoyed letting him claim her. None of the other men on the beach would ever know her the way Sylar did, the way Gabriel did.

"You should ask her. She absolutely adores you, ya know. Thinks you're too handsome to be wearing so much black." Claire laughed.
Sep. 14th, 2010 04:57 am (UTC)
"Ah, an opinion you share then," he smiled, knowing Claire preferred to see him in colour, just as much as she loved wearing it herself. "I like it though. I'm comfortable. It's just the eyeliner I'd happily be shot of.

"I'll ask her about it though. See if we can work something out. Then I can keep an eye on you with out lurking so obviously," he smirked, always worrying. Anything could happen, especially in a city like L.A.
Sep. 14th, 2010 05:01 am (UTC)
Claire chuckled and rolled back, pulling her sunglasses back on from the top of her head and laying out properly. "Until then, we enjoy our free time in the sun."

And they did. The two romped a bit more in the water and even got coaxed by a pair of fellow 'goths' into playing a little electro-friz before making their way back to their apartment. Claire was all smiles the whole time, certainly letting her guard down a bit now that they were more comfortable.
Sep. 14th, 2010 05:15 am (UTC)
Only a couple nights later, Gabriel had worked out a deal with Mama-san that got their rent cut and him playing security guard to the club. Not that there was ever any real problems. His main concern was walking girls to their cars once the night had ended.

About a week or so after that a new customer started coming in. A younger Japanese business man, handsome, and with money to spend. Unlike the others, he was harder to deter in his curiosity about Claire. Rather than take a table with the girls straight away, he liked to come sit at the bar and try to buy the tender drinks and get her to chat with him.

"I want to practice English," he explained in a thickly accented voice. "I need it better for work." Though he never mentioned what that work was, just introduced himself as Tanaka, a most horribly common Japanese name.
Sep. 14th, 2010 05:19 am (UTC)
Mama-san was not too pleased with this man, but he as paying them, none the less. She allowed him to stay only because he was a big spender and obeyed the rules of not tipping the bartender or buying her any drinks, though it took a few stern talkings to.

"Konbanwa, Tanaka." Claire greeted him as he came in again, sitting in the same seat and ordering the same drink as always. Since they had a bottle service, the man already had Vodka on his tab. "How's the English going?"
Sep. 14th, 2010 05:27 am (UTC)
"Every time better," he flashed a bright white smile, enjoying flirting. He was also enjoying this one-sided cat and mouse game. At first he'd just come flirting. Then he'd started feeling like the girl was familiar. Then he'd gotten a few dark glares from the man at the door and it had become a habit.

The thrill was amazing. Every evening he passed undetected under the nose of one of history's most notorious killers, sat here and chatted up one of the most illusive fugitives, a treasure among women. He knew he should move on this intelligence, soon, before some one else caught on, but Tanaka had felt too long like just a cog in the great corporate machine.

"You're very good tutor."
Sep. 14th, 2010 05:34 am (UTC)
"Thank you." Claire smiled, her grin a bit more brilliant than normal. She too got a talking to from Mama-san. She was told she looked too cold and that she needed to be more friendly which worked out well. In reality, Claire was all too friendly.

"You know, you should really pick out a hostess soon or Mama-san will eventually kill you. I've seen it happen." She laughed, pouring the man another drink.

"She no lie." The elder Japanese woman sneered. "Bodies are in my freezer."
Sep. 14th, 2010 05:43 am (UTC)
"She is prettiest girl here," Tanaka retorted, tossing back another drink of his greyhound. "And I have good insurance. Shenoy has bery good kurio-genic department." He totally butchered the pronunciation of "cryogenics", but he was understandable.
Sep. 14th, 2010 05:46 am (UTC)
The color visibly drained from Claire's skin.

"Did you say, Shenoy?" She asked, making sure her voice didn't shake and that her smile didn't waiver. "That's a pretty big place. And it's cry-yo-genics." She grinned, pointing out his mistake and hopefully drawing attention away from her need to puke.
Sep. 14th, 2010 05:54 am (UTC)
Tanaka looked a bit startled himself. He'd gotten into a lull, talking with the immortal so often over the last few days. He hadn't realized!

Immediately the apologetic Asian smile appeared on his moderately handsome face. "Oh, thank you. Yes. My company has health insurance policy with Shenoy." Because it WAS Shenoy, but he did his best to cover that. "But I don't think mine really covers kuraio," he pronounced it more carefully, but still sounded funny.
Sep. 14th, 2010 06:00 am (UTC)
"Of course." Claire laughed, cleaning a glass and placing it back on the rack. "Mama-san." She addressed the woman now. "I'm going to get more ice." And before the old woman could even respond, Claire was moving. It wasn't that she felt she needed to run yet, but suddenly she wasn't liking this Tanaka person anymore.

As she walked by the door with her ice bucket, she called out to Sylar.

"Hey, Mike? Where'd you put the ice pick?" Hopefully the brunette would find that line odd enough. People hadn't used ice picks for years.
Sep. 14th, 2010 06:27 am (UTC)
"Ice pick?" Gabriel's brow furrowed, definitely not expecting that. He turned away from his station at the door to check on her, seeing what the heck she was talking about, because even if there was such an archaic device in this bar, he would certainly not have had any cause to use or even move it. "What?"

In the mean time, Tanaka had picked a girl at random to sit and chat with, hoping he had not just tipped off and frightened away his quarry. Either way, it was time the game ended. Time to bring the girl and her unlikely guardian in.
Sep. 14th, 2010 09:32 pm (UTC)
"Yeah, you know." Claire raised her eyebrows. "Maybe you can help me find it?" With that, she took off to the back room with her bucket in hopes that the brunette would follow her.

Mama-san was pleased that Tanaka moved and finally chose a girl. It was rather annoying that he would sit at the bar. At least he'd leave her bartender alone now. Or so she thought.
Sep. 14th, 2010 10:09 pm (UTC)
He did indeed follow her, catching the oddity of it. "What is it? What's going on? Was that Tanaka creep getting too cozy?" He could only hope it was something so benign, easily dealt with. The use of code didn't really suggest that, though.
Sep. 15th, 2010 05:02 am (UTC)
"Far more than that." Claire hushed in a whisper, putting he bucket down. "He let it slip he works for Shenoy... at least, that's what it sounded like." Of course, doubts were always present, but the former cheerleader didn't want to leave anything to chance. "Maybe he was telling the truth, but it would explain his unyielding interest in me and the overall creepy vibe I get from him."
