The Sixth Extinction

Character(s): Gabriel "Sylar" Gray and Claire Bennet
Summary: Building 26 is never shut down. No one convinces the president that it's best to just drop the matter of evolved humans, and Danko is given cart blanche to deal with the super-powered threat as he sees fit. In the next century the Evolved are hunted to the brink of extinction, either out-right exterminated, or imprisoned and exploited for their ability. The number of specials used in this way grows fewer and fewer as time and mishaps progress, but one type is still coveted above all. Exterminating a regenerator is exceedingly difficult, anyway...
Status: In progress/PRIVATE

"That we will," and that made him infinitely happy. The struggle to maintain his self would be lessened by having some one else in on the subterfuge, some one who knew him well. It made things seem less bleak, in spite of the radar-ducking ahead. "After all the excitement of today though, I think I'm about beat. The rest of the grand master plan can wait til morning, I think."
Feb. 17th, 2010 10:37 am (UTC)
"Okay." Claire smiled and nodded, though her voice reflected a little bit of disappointment. She wasn't very tired anymore, but she knew that Sylar was right and that they needed to rest up for the traveling ahead of them.

"Goodnight." She whispered, closing her eyes and burying her nose into the brunette's shoulder, willing herself to drift off.

"Good night, Claire," he murmured contentedly, still amazed and gratified by the turns of events that had brought them here. The hotel may have been small and a bit seedy, the circumstances depressing, but for once they each had someone to hold on to, keep them sane and not feeling totally adrift.

Gabriel found himself wishing he had even more people from his past to share these discoveries with. He wondered if perhaps, if they could have all been immortal, split apart for decades and then come together once again, if maybe everyone could have learned to put aside their differences and become friends...?

Such was the futile conjecture that bore him away into his dreams.

Claire eventually drifted off, letting that warm feeling of a body next to her lull her off to dreamland. She didn't dream much, just random things. When the alarm Gabriel had set went off the next morning, she groaned in protest and buried herself deeper both against her companion and beneath the sheets.

"Make it stop..." Came the former blond's muffled and irritated voice from beneath the covers.
Feb. 17th, 2010 10:27 pm (UTC)
Gabriel flailed a moment, then pulled the clock into his hand for convenience and hit the button with his thumb, plunging the room back into blessed silence. "Ugh... talk about antiques..."

He sighed in annoyance, fixating on the electronic clock for a moment before the realization of the warm weight of Claire's body still laid out along side and halfway over him dawned on him again. The sigh switched gears in the middle and became a contended purr as he snuggled more fully again. He was once again reminded that though they were on the run, they were doing so together, because they'd both woken up with the other still right there.
Feb. 18th, 2010 12:29 am (UTC)
"You know it's going to go off again in like ten minutes, right?" Came more muffled speech beneath the sheets. Honestly, Claire didn't want to go anywhere. She just wanted to rest. She was still pretty rung out from the day before, what with the running and electrocution and scariness of it all.

To be honest, the bloodbath didn't other her so much. One would have thought that it would, but it didn't. She was completely fine with the fact that Sylar had broken those who looked upon her as an object and not a person.

"Can't we just stay here?" She asked, knowing that they couldn't, but really not wanting to move just yet. She pet the Intuitive's belly affectionately and kissed one bare shoulder.
Feb. 19th, 2010 12:11 am (UTC)
"Mmm, I could turn a sink to gold or something and buy off the proprietor. We could run a crappy hotel for shady people like ourselves and forget LA," he suggested in jest, also quite comfortable right where he was and not keen on moving. It was inevitable though. There weren't enough people here for them to fade into.
Feb. 19th, 2010 12:23 am (UTC)
"Mmm." Claire snuggled down, rolling over and pulling Sylar's arm with her, using the man as a blanket. "I like that idea." She smiled softly.
Feb. 20th, 2010 11:29 am (UTC)
"Yeah..." after that he dozed without speaking again, not until the alarm sounded, ten minutes later, just as Claire predicted. Gabriel sighed deeply and reached for it again. "Damn you, Alarm, and your insistence on logic and responsibility."
Feb. 22nd, 2010 04:55 am (UTC)
"Curses..." The blond gave a small smirk and crawled out of bed after the brunette. "I suppose this means more traveling." Claire added, pulling on her jeans as she spoke. "Reeeeaaaaalllly looking forward to that."

Clearly, she was being sarcastic.
Feb. 22nd, 2010 11:13 pm (UTC)
"Well, you're brunette now, so that's a step toward relaxing. We can stretch out in the car and just let it take us to LA. Then the real stress begins. Finding a home, getting papers made," he sighed and dressed for the day ahead with all the enthusiasm of a 2nd grader getting ready for school on a cancelled snow day.
Feb. 22nd, 2010 11:44 pm (UTC)
They were in the car and moving again slightly later than they should have been, but honestly, who cared? It wasn't like they were super recognizable anymore. Claire's headshot was on the morning news, but the photo was a very old one, most likely from the Shenoy files. The former blond scoffed and flicked off the news monitor in the car, turning on the music broadcast instead, dialing in an oldies station to make her feel better.

She sang along to the Lady Gaga song while Sylar grinned at her being silly. They stopped for food or to resupply. They drove for hours on end and by the time the made it to Nevada, Claire was sound asleep.
Feb. 27th, 2010 11:55 am (UTC)
Sylar watched Claire sleep for a long time, still fascinated with her, how lovely she was, and how lucky he was that she wasn't holding grudges now. It had over turned his life, but he was more and more okay with that as time went on. The only thing he missed was her golden hair.

But they were going to have fun, living together, the only one's in on the joke when they went out in mournful black. Putting on a show for the populace.

They whipped past the lights of Las Vegas and on to the coast, arriving in L.A. in the dead of night. The brunette just sat in the car for a few minutes, parked on a rare bit of street that didn't have any restrictions except for street cleaning, which had occurred the day before yesterday.

The vehicle wouldn't be found for nearly a week, and down this far on Sepulveda, a stone's throw from LAX, authorities would assume whoever had stolen the car had skipped the country. If only it were that easy.

"Claire?" he finally began to rouse her, figuring she'd like to get the rest of her sleep in some sort of actual bed.
Feb. 28th, 2010 04:11 am (UTC)
"Hmm?" The former blond rolled over and when she saw Sylar, she grinned. "Oh. Hi." She smiled, stretching and yawning before leaning up to see exactly where she was. "

I take it we've made it to the city of starlets and sunshine?" She chuckled as she looked around at the desolate street.
Aug. 21st, 2010 05:09 am (UTC)
"That we have. Too bad about all this Shenoy business. Hollywood would love you. An actress, leading lady material no less, who will never fade," he chuckled flatly.

"C'mon. Let's get out of here, stretch our legs and find a place we can hole up until tomorrow. Then we can find the rest of our disguises, get our paperwork together... all the little details of our new lives." His smile was brave, but slightly strained.
Aug. 21st, 2010 06:35 am (UTC)
"No. I don't think I'd like Hollywood all that much." Claire sighed. She didn't like eyes on her all the time. She would rather just fade into the crowd. Certainly that came from all of the exposure after the Specials War. After that, nobody like her wanted to be seen or heard, ever.

As they walked down the street looking for a suitable place to park themselves for the night, the blond looked around at the city she once knew rather well. Nothing much had changed in the past fifty or so years since she been in Los Angeles. The roads were still poorly paved and packed with cars, even at the late hour. Lights still glittered on the horizon from all of the houses further down in the valley and overhead, planes came and left LAX, carrying tourists and business folk on their red-eye flights.

"I kind of missed California." She sighed, mainly to herself. "Good weather." Claire gave Sylar a brighter smile. At least she wasn't alone.
Aug. 21st, 2010 07:04 am (UTC)
"It is a nice night," Gabriel agreed, walking close, protective. "Comfortable."

Which was fortunate, as they had a ways to walk before they reached a travel hotel they could check in. Not too far, given how near they were to LAX, but enough that the relative warmth of the lingering heat rising of the pavement was appreciated.

He changed his face to check them in, just to avoid any lobby cameras, got them a queen sized single and came back for Claire. After the day they'd just had, he wanted nothing better than to just climb in to bed together and take solace in one another's warmth.
Aug. 21st, 2010 07:10 am (UTC)
Sylar certainly got what he wanted. He wasn't between the sheets for less than a second when he had a small body encircling his middle. Claire needed that closeness more than ever. She felt so small and alone. The tall brunette was going to be her anchor in ways that she'd never had until now. There was no way she wasn't going to take full advantage.

"I miss my blond already." She whispered softly, snuggling her nose into Sylar's shoulder.
Aug. 21st, 2010 07:39 am (UTC)
"I do, too," Gabriel agreed, petting his fingers through her brunette. "I keep thinking maybe I should bleach my head. Restore the balance," he kidded, partially. It might be a good idea to have a more thorough disguise, but he doubted it would make things better for them, emotionally.
Aug. 21st, 2010 07:53 am (UTC)
"Oh please god no." Claire groaned, a soft chuckle following after. This was another reason that she was glad she was not alone. Sylar would make her smile even though her heart was tired and her spirit was broken. "I do not want to be walking around with a twenty-third century Billy Idol."
Aug. 21st, 2010 08:45 am (UTC)
"No? I wouldn't look good with white-blond spikes, strutting around in studs and leather?" he raised a playful eyebrow, arms slung about her and holding her close. "I dunno, it could be fun."
Aug. 21st, 2010 06:03 pm (UTC)
"Not permanently, no." Claire chuckled softly, burying her face as she did. "I think you look good with the tall dark and scary. Plus I don't think you have much to worry about. You can just shape-shift. I wish I could do that..."

That statement was followed with a sigh. This would be so much easier. The former blond was actually very jealous of that ability. It would make hiding a cinch.
Aug. 22nd, 2010 08:27 am (UTC)
"It is not all it is cracked up to be, trust me. It's too easy to lose track of who I am, if I use it too much. Then shifting back gets harder. Sometimes the temptation to just give up and become some one else is near maddening," he admitted, finally. He was close enough to her now to do that. He knew she wouldn't use it to attack him, not any more.
Aug. 23rd, 2010 04:59 pm (UTC)
Claire wouldn't know how to use that information against Sylar even if she wanted to. She knew that they were equally damaged at this point and that there was really no need to point that out anymore.

"But at least you have an easy escape." The small woman sighed. "I would kill to have that sort of ability; being able to change into someone else. Makes running so much easier."

Of course, the words left her mouth before she even had a chance to think of what they would mean to a person who actually had killed for just such an ability.
Aug. 23rd, 2010 11:53 pm (UTC)
"...No you wouldn't," was Gabriel's only comment on that. He hugged her a little closer and kissed the top of her head lovingly. "Though given the crime's already committed, I wish I could have taken that illusionist's ability after all. Then you could stay sunny, blonde you and I could blanket us both in any disguise when we went out. Such a waste."
