The Sixth Extinction

Character(s): Gabriel "Sylar" Gray and Claire Bennet
Summary: Building 26 is never shut down. No one convinces the president that it's best to just drop the matter of evolved humans, and Danko is given cart blanche to deal with the super-powered threat as he sees fit. In the next century the Evolved are hunted to the brink of extinction, either out-right exterminated, or imprisoned and exploited for their ability. The number of specials used in this way grows fewer and fewer as time and mishaps progress, but one type is still coveted above all. Exterminating a regenerator is exceedingly difficult, anyway...
Status: In progress/PRIVATE

"...I'm liking this less and less... You're not going to change entirely, are you? I mean, the image of mopey goth Claire is kind of amusing, but I'm not so sure I really want to live like that..." He was about as much of a fan of "lying" these days as she was. He did so much of it that he was just tired. It wasn't a fun game any more.
Feb. 16th, 2010 06:52 am (UTC)
"Like I said, I can't change my face like you." She frowned. "I have to go extreme so that I look nothing like my old self. Sorry." It wasn't like she wanted to change, she HAD to change. "We can finish my full transformation when we get to LA, but I'll have to color and cut my hair as soon as possible."
Feb. 16th, 2010 07:09 am (UTC)
"I suppose so..." which made Gabriel wonder if he shouldn't change as well? Really change. Not just make a false identity to hide behind, but go in with Claire in really looking different. Maybe bleach blonde, like Johnny in The Outsiders. Did anyone even still read S.E. Hinton?

They stopped off again in a tiny podunk little town in the middle of Nebraska. It didn't matter how much population exploded, how metropolitan the world became, NO ONE wanted to live in flat, endless Nebraska. It was the perfect place to grab hair dye and stylist shears. Gabriel stood in the combination drugstore/fast food restaurant/gas station looking over all the products available to enact physical transformations, frowning at their wretched situation.

Claire waited in the car until Sylar returned with her small list of required items. She looked over the hair color with a small crease in her forehead. She really wasn't looking forward to this.

Once everything needed was in her possession, they made there way to a small motel, the brunette transforming into some random person to grab a room where the two could go about their business. Claire was rather mopey for the evening, putting off the inevitable before finally turning the to the man and holding out the shears for him to take.

"Just don't cut it too short. Maybe a little above my shoulders?" It honestly looked like the blond was going to cry. She really loved her hair.
Feb. 16th, 2010 07:21 am (UTC)
"Don't worry, you can trust me," he kissed the crown of her head as he took the shears and went to work, gently snipping away the length. Perhaps she'd be surprised, but he was good at this. The brunette usually didn't take an actual job, but sometimes, if he got bored out of his skull and wanted something to pass the time, he would start cutting hair out of his home. It allowed him to be productive without having to give anyone a social security number or a back ground check.

She was actually going to end up with a really cute cut. Probably a little more feminine than she was used to, Gabriel giving her a medium-length retro look that would work nicely with her curls. Her colour was going to be severe enough, he wanted to make sure there was still something soft about the girl.
Feb. 16th, 2010 07:31 am (UTC)
Claire kept her eyes closed through most of it so that she didn't have to see those blond curls fall away from her head to settle on the floor around her. When the brunette finished, she looked at the floor and cringed before turning to look up at him.

"Thank you." She said in a small voice before moving to the bathroom to go ahead and apply the color. When she caught her reflection, she cringed again, but decided that the cut itself wasn't that bad. Sylar had actually done a rather fine job.

She pulled her hair (what was left of it) up with the color, letting the black sit for about a half an hour before turning on the shower.

"I'll be out in a moment." She told him, before disappearing again to rinse out and find the new her.
Feb. 16th, 2010 07:37 am (UTC)
Gabriel waited with a certain apprehension. He was so used to bright, blonde Claire, that piece of his lost world. Now she would be different. She would probably look older, colder, and he didn't like that thought. His own hair was getting a little long, now, and while she rinsed hers out in the bathroom, he played around with the memory files of DNA, changing his own hair to different shades as he looked in the mirror. It was getting long enough now for the colour to be noticeable. He definitely didn't look like himself with white-blonde strands, but it was his normal brunette again by the time she came out.
Feb. 16th, 2010 07:41 am (UTC)
Claire stepped out in a pair of cotton panties and a tank, looking so much harsher than the old Claire. She looked dark and cold, the hair color making her skin look even more pale than before. She would need color, or in the case of going goth, perhaps not.

"So, I guess that's that." She said, frowning softly and moving to sit on the bed. She certainly looked like someone had run over her puppy. "Tada..." She held out her arms and pointed to her head, her voice flat and not enthused.
Feb. 16th, 2010 07:47 am (UTC)
He frowned at the lackluster reveal, definitely not a fan, but even less so because of how much it obviously depressed her. "Well, that's no good, come here."

He took to her hair again, this time running his fingers through it, and when he did he used the same thermokinetic ability that had heated the water on her first day, and with his fingers as curling irons he turned her damp, lank hair into something sort of old Hollywood glamour. "Try this. If you rouge your lips in a dark berry I think it might actually be kind of lovely."
Feb. 16th, 2010 07:52 am (UTC)
Claire closed her eyes again, allowing the feeling of Sylar's fingers in her hair comfort her. She honestly didn't care what he was doing. Only that it felt good.

"Mmm... okay..." She smirked a little as he gave her beauty instructions. "You sure you don't like boys too?" She joked, hoping to get a good reaction that would get her mind off things.
Feb. 16th, 2010 07:57 am (UTC)
The brunette scowled at her question, ruffling the back of her head to loosen some of the curls and maybe to jostle her in retaliation some, too. "Just because I've been a stylist does not make me gay!" Really he didn't understand. Why was she so hell bent on the idea that he was interested in other men?!
Feb. 16th, 2010 08:00 am (UTC)
Claire laughed openly at Sylar's reaction. "It's not just the styling." She chuckled, turning her gaze on him. "You have other indicators. The way you act, talk, how romantic you can be... mannerisms. I'm just saying." She grinned. "You're very metro."
Feb. 16th, 2010 08:06 am (UTC)
The scowl only deepened as he let go of her hair, deciding he was pleased enough with the way it looked. She no longer looked like a waterlogged vampire, more like a silent film star, one of the early 'talkies' maybe. She was pretty, and still looked young when she laughed like that.

"Okay, I'll bite. Tell me what else I do that makes me ping on your gaydar?" he really kind of didn't want to hear this, but it seemed his frustrations were amusing, and he wasn't all that irritated. This wasn't going to start an actual fight, not the way it might have several decades ago.
Feb. 16th, 2010 08:13 am (UTC)
"You cook far too good for a normal boy, but I suppose that can be attributed to age." She grinned. "And you are very very clean, which I appreciate, but not very masculine..." She looked off into the distance, thinking hard. "You just sort of give off the vibe, not that there's anything wrong with that, but I'm sure you've been openly hit on a few times." She chuckled.

"And you style hair, for Christ's sake! I don't care who you are or how old you've gotten, that is pretty gay." She snorted, covering her mouth after the noise emanated.
Feb. 16th, 2010 08:19 am (UTC)
"Actually, my mother taught me to cook, from the time I could see over the kitchen counter. The cleanliness is lingering habits from severe O.C.D., and... I don't have any good explanation for the styling. I just like hair!" he stuck his tongue out at her, his defensiveness mostly exaggerated, an equal and opposite reaction to her teasing. "It's not like I run around with a lisp and a limp wrist, sheesh."
Feb. 16th, 2010 08:25 am (UTC)
"Yeah, but that is highly out dated and terribly unattractive." Claire laughed, sticking her tongue out at him as well. "It's not like you have that "GAY!" vibe." She flung up hands up in the air and waved them around all jazzy-like.

"You give off the more... hmm... bisexual kind of feelings. Like you don't really mind who you're having sex with. You're just concerned with safe and fun times." Claire gave him a winning smile, hoping that would clear it up.
Feb. 16th, 2010 08:29 am (UTC)
The brunette looked upward, considering that explanation and after a moment just shrugged. "I don't know. For the longest time, I didn't even give a damn. I haven't pursued anyone male. It's never really been an issue. And right now I like you pretty well, so I don't think it will be."

He stretched out on the bed, stomach down and propped up on his elbows. "What about you? Ever get girl-on-girl experimental?" He grinned, that sort of semi-perverted boyish grin.
Feb. 16th, 2010 08:32 am (UTC)
"Of course." Claire scoffed, as if it was completely natural and totally expected. "It's honestly not as fun as having a tall, handsome man in my bed, but it has it's ups." She smiled, giving the brunette a wink and laying down beside him with an arm beneath her head and her free arm on her hip.

"So you've never experimented? Hmm... pity. I would think that would be kinda hot." She grinned deviously.

Feb. 16th, 2010 08:36 am (UTC)
Well, didn't that just make Gabriel go red in the cheeks. It was seriously stupid to hold on to. Maybe he was sort of an old curmudgeon in that respect, but the idea of the homosexual as forbidden, disgusting, other, had just been too successfully drilled into his head. "What the hell is hot about men... doing... ugh, no!" He shook his head vehemently.
Feb. 16th, 2010 08:39 am (UTC)
"No?" Claire pouted, rolling onto her tummy next to him. "You don't think that just the sin of it is attractive? How about strong arms and fuzzy chests? Just the idea that men can be as sexually open as women... I find it very arousing." She winked at him, knowing that not only did she make an attractive picture, but her words would certainly plant uncomfortable images in Sylar's mind. She was loving teasing him.
Feb. 16th, 2010 08:44 am (UTC)
His face was getting even more red, his blood pounding uncomfortably in his ears and... other places. "Well, that's fine for you. I prefer my partners petite and curvaceous. Thank you."

He didn't want to be imagining those things. It was all too odd, because there were vague ideas in his mind about something... sort of similar. But it felt long buried and not of the world he now knew.
Feb. 16th, 2010 08:49 am (UTC)
"Oh, but there are sweet and nubile young boys out there too." Claire grinned, absolutely adoring the pink color in Sylar's cheeks. "I can think of plenty of current and old actors that were certainly pretty enough little things. I can think of old friends of ours too." She smiled seductively, rolling back on her side to rub her belly softly.

"Dr. Suresh seemed pretty fierce to me... boy certainly liked color." She pointed out, her memories of the Indian all very fond ones, although she totally thought he was on the down low. "Didn't you spend some time with him out west?" She teased, knowing this would only make that pink brighter.
Feb. 16th, 2010 08:56 am (UTC)
There was practically steam coming out of his ears at this point. Sudden images flashed into his mind's eye, ages old and yet perfectly clear. Mohinder Suresh, brilliant, passionate, and achingly beautiful. Of all his adversaries, Gabriel Sylar had never been more pleased than when he'd been facing off against the progeny of the man who had made him, too.

"I wanted the goddamn list! That's all! He had the potential of adding scores of names to it, hundreds, God knows even thousands given time," he pushed up off the bed suddenly, leaving the space entirely and going to "clean up for bed" by splashing his face with cool water from the tap.
Feb. 16th, 2010 09:00 am (UTC)
Claire blinked at the empty space in front of her, wondering what exactly happened right there. She was only teasing, but now it seemed that the former blond had hit on a very sensitive nerve.

"Wait a sec..." She laughed. "You did like him, didn't you!" She accused, flinging herself up and following the brunette. "Ha! No wonder you're flipping. I think it's cute..." She giggled. "I mean, he certainly was... loved his hair. Wish could have gotten mine to shine like that."
Feb. 16th, 2010 09:08 am (UTC)
"I didn't 'like' him, he was useful," Sylar insisted, burying his face into the scratchy, over-bleached hand towel. "Not to mention he made an excellent punching bag."

'God, the way he screamed...'

"I mean, he shoved a lumbar needle into the back of my neck and tortured me with a fucking tuning fork, that doesn't exactly engender affection." In normal people. If he was honest with himself, which he entirely wasn't, for Sylar that kind of thing was like foreplay.
