The Sixth Extinction

Character(s): Gabriel "Sylar" Gray and Claire Bennet
Summary: Building 26 is never shut down. No one convinces the president that it's best to just drop the matter of evolved humans, and Danko is given cart blanche to deal with the super-powered threat as he sees fit. In the next century the Evolved are hunted to the brink of extinction, either out-right exterminated, or imprisoned and exploited for their ability. The number of specials used in this way grows fewer and fewer as time and mishaps progress, but one type is still coveted above all. Exterminating a regenerator is exceedingly difficult, anyway...
Status: In progress/PRIVATE

"I think, in time, I can put it behind me... it's already helped that you put things right." Claire admitted, truly not feeling as mad at the brunette as one would have expected. She was terribly thankful. "I honestly don't know how I can ever thank you."
Dec. 31st, 2009 12:09 am (UTC)
"The bear hug was nice," he managed a genuine smile and stood finally, running his hand over his hair. "Very expressive."

He moved to the sink beside her to wash blood and cranial fluid from his hands, though he hadn't gotten nearly as messy as he had sometimes in the past. "I'm half thinking of making breakfast, but I'm not sure I'll be eating for a bit." Honestly he just wanted something normal and comforting to do.
Dec. 31st, 2009 12:19 am (UTC)
"Why don't we go for a walk? Out for breakfast?" Claire suggested, feeling the need for normal as well. "I just need to shower and then we can go to a waffle house, get us some nice big belgian waffles, doused in syrup." She smiled, hoping that this idea would pick up both their spirits.
Dec. 31st, 2009 12:34 am (UTC)
"Sure," he smiled a bit wider, still feeling lightheaded, worried, listening for the dark whispers that any moment he expected to hear like a serpent's tongue in his mental ear. "I'll be waiting," he dried his hands and gave her shoulders a light pat before going to dress for going out. He felt like he was moving through water though, every movement slow and weighted.
Dec. 31st, 2009 01:07 am (UTC)
Claire took much longer than usual to shower, the girl not being used to the burn of temperature, the pain again fascinating her. She also watched the orange tinge in the water swill around the drain and was meticulous about getting all the brain residue out of her hair.

When she felt clean and the water had practically run cold, claire stepped out, quickly moving to change into a nice sweet sun dress, perfect for the lovely weather outside.

"Ready?" She asked as she stepped out into the living area.

He was sitting, sipping tea, keeping himself relaxed and trying not to think too deeply on the beautiful construction of Claire's mind. Seeing her come in he looked up and nodded, setting the cup aside to stand and join her. "I am. And I might even have some appetite," he lead the way out, admiring how bright and happy she looked in the vibrant sundress. "You look radiant."
Dec. 31st, 2009 01:55 am (UTC)
"Uh... thanks." She grinned, sidling up next to him with a smile. "So let's go."

They set out of the apartment, Claire saying that she'd rather walk to the eatery that she'd looked up on the computer before they'd left. It was a bright and sunny day, just what the doctor ordered.

"Nice weather." She smiled, looking up at her tall companion. "I like it."
Dec. 31st, 2009 02:39 am (UTC)
He smiled in agreement, turning his face up to the light. "It's a hell of a lot better these days. Clean air. Even when it rains it's good. But it's nice to see the sun, too," he managed more of a grin. He felt some of the shadows in his mind dissapating even as they walked.

When they got to the restaurant he requested a window table and tall glasses of cold milk while they looked through the menus on the touch sensitive tabletop. He scrolled through the photos and descriptions of the Belgian waffles and their toppings. "Decisions, decisions."
Dec. 31st, 2009 02:59 am (UTC)
"Tell me about it." Claire grinned as she too looked through the choices while sipping her chocolate milk. there were a damn lot, in her opinion. "When did waffles get so complicated?" She asked, a knowing smile on her face.

"Know what you want, dears?" Asked the waitress, tapping away at her own personal touch pad.

"I will have a gingerbread waffle please. Extra whipped cream." She smiled at the waitress. "Ooh! And can I also get sprinkles on it?"

"Of course." The woman grinned, turning to Sylar. "And for the gentleman?"
Dec. 31st, 2009 03:32 am (UTC)
"The gentleman will have the Georgia Peach a la mode, please," Sylar responded with a good natured teasing. "One of my favorites."

Claire had made a good call. Sunlight and sweet, filling food would go a long way toward repairing the shock Sylar suffered at reawakening old vices. He knew he couldn't go back to that again, there was no power to gain and the rest would just be mindless killing.

Still, it was difficult not to worry. He never knew where a step too far was.
Dec. 31st, 2009 07:38 am (UTC)
"Hmm... almost make me want to change my mind." Claire grinned, but shook her head at the waitress, who disappeared to put in their order. "But certainly not enough to deny my my favorite flavor of pastry." She laughed, sipping her chocolate milk some more and eyeing the brunette over the rim of her glass.

She thought back to the kiss. It really wasn't so bad now that she wasn't entirely hateful towards him. He did fix her, but only partially. It would be easier to forgive the mistake of leaving her feeling less human than it would be violating her in ways that no one could possibly understand.

"Tell me about Gwen." Claire suddenly spoke up. "I know she must be a slightly sore subject, but what was she like?"
Dec. 31st, 2009 11:30 am (UTC)
He stopped short in drinking his whole white milk and let the straw go slowly. It was a sore subject, not one that really complimented sunlight and sweetness, but Claire would be the only person he could open up to about this. And he did need to get some of it off his chest.

Drawing a soft breath he reflected a moment before saying anything. "She's one of those girls who doesn't know she's beautiful. A just a little too skinny, but I had ideas on how to remedy that. She's tough and very business-like at first, but a genuine interest in and an impressive knowledge of her wares helped break the ice and get me underneath her armour.

"Bookish. Almost librarian-esque, but pretty. Gorgeous in a silk cocktail dress. ...but, I suppose, greedy and opportunistic, too," he shook his head slighty, eyes on his glass. Sold, like chattle, all over again.
Dec. 31st, 2009 06:03 pm (UTC)
"Did she know you? Or Sean... or someone else?" Claire's voice was very soft and gentle. She knew that this was tough. She was never betrayed by a person, only her own stupidity. She actually felt sorry for the man, wanting to reach out and tell him that she would never do that. It was an odd sensation.
Dec. 31st, 2009 10:21 pm (UTC)
"She knew me as Alex, which is pretty much me, light. I tell people that my mother died when I was young so my father gave me up for adoption to his brother and sister-in-law, but I leave out the actual manner. I adjust the details of my growing up to fit the modern age, but not the emotional content. Of course I skip everything from when I met Chandra, on, and that's simple enough since that's the age I reset myself at every time.

"So she knew me, as best as I could allow," his voice was quiet and manner subdued as he spoke. It was rough, emotionally, but he wasn't in danger of crying. It still took quite a bit to bring the brunette to tears.
Jan. 1st, 2010 02:16 am (UTC)
"I'm sorry." Claire said with a frown, the tension only broken by the waitress bringing their waffles. Once the blond had her pastry in front of her, she put butter and each crevice and made sure that enough of the syrup got in every nook.

"I won't turn you in... ever. I promise." She said, thinking about how the brunette was betrayed and decided that it needed saying.
Jan. 1st, 2010 02:56 am (UTC)
He looked up, a mild surprise on his face, fork half lifted and hovering. "...Thank you."

If she hadn't turned him over by now it was difficult to imagine that she would, but indeed, God only knew what she may have done out of a need for vengeance, or some sense of duty to protect the world from him, or just to make him pay for his crimes. He'd killed so many, he would have won the death sentence several times over, multiple life sentences, and unlike most multiple murderers, he had the ability to serve all of them.

Internment at Shenoy was perhaps the only way to force him to serve them, but she wasn't demanding that. "And obviously I'll do the same for you."
Jan. 1st, 2010 03:47 pm (UTC)
"Obviously." Claire smiled at him, good and genuine. "I actually believe you one hundred percent." Of course Sylar wouldn't turn her in. He, for some strange reason, was protective of her. Claire could tell. It was why he got so angry at the jerk at the party and why it was so important to him to fix what he'd done to her so many years ago.

"You care too much about me to let me go now." The words were meant as a playful joke. She honestly didn't know how deeply true they were.
Jan. 1st, 2010 09:14 pm (UTC)
"Well, yes. Especially to those bastards," his answer was honest but not too weighted. It was an innocuous enough word, care, and he'd already told her he was capable of such feeling. He had no reason not to be truthful, and the turn in conversation gave him back the appetite to start in on his waffles.
Jan. 1st, 2010 09:49 pm (UTC)
Claire smiled, happy to begin downing her super sweet waffles. They were absolutely delicious and there was little talking due to pastry enjoyment. The blond, for her petite stature, ate her whole plate and even took in two glasses of chocolate milk.

"That was sooo yummy." She smiled, patting her belly a little, grinning brightly at the brunette sitting across from her. All in all, Claire thought it was a good breakfast.
Jan. 1st, 2010 10:04 pm (UTC)
"Absolutely delicious," he agreed. "An excellent suggestion."

He would have never imagined he'd be catching breakfast with some one right after opening their head. It was the odd world that he lived in where such things occured, but he was indeed exceedingly glad he'd had this opportunity for even partial atonement.

After paying the bill he suggested they continue their walk for a while, to take advantage of the good weather. "I imagine you're eager for some fresh air?"
Jan. 2nd, 2010 12:43 am (UTC)
"Absolutely!" Claire beamed, standing and following the brunette out into the beautiful day. She stuck near him as they walked, careful not to stick out too much. For all she knew, Shenoy had it out for her. It wasn't like she could change her face like Sylar could. She tried not to think about it as they made their way to the park.

"So at least you were duped when you were caught. I was just stupid." She said, remaining on topic. "I stepped out in front of a car. A cop car of all things."
Jan. 2nd, 2010 01:47 am (UTC)
"So you mentioned," he nodded, walking with a slightly shortened stride so that she didn't have to patter along side him. "But that's a mistake anyone could make. Especially at the speeds vehicles move at times now, it can be so dangerous. But just like I won't give you to them, I won't let them kidnap you again. So, if you feel inclined to walk in front of any more cruisers..." he teased at the end, grinning.
Jan. 2nd, 2010 02:17 am (UTC)
"I'll keep that in mind in case I get the hankering." She smiled at the tease. "And I'll cut a bitch if she decides to break your heart." Claire chuckled. She was actually feeling slightly more protective of the brunette now, even with the bit of awkwardness between them. They shared a very important thing in common. Longevity.
Jan. 2nd, 2010 03:34 am (UTC)
The brunette laughed, pushing his hands into his pockets. "Oh, yeah? Well, I dint think you have to worry too much. I think I'll be taking a break from the dating scene, and be much more careful about it when I dive in again. I'm not big on heart break, nor avoiding whole neighborhoods in fear of ex-girlfriends. I mean, honestly, what do you say after that?"
Jan. 2nd, 2010 06:26 am (UTC)
"I'd be pissed. Give her a piece of my mind before I moved on." Claire said, a bit of gusto in her voice. "If I were in your position, I would have driven a car into a wall with the douche bag in the passenger seat, but that's just me." It was almost as if the blond felt betrayed for Sylar.
