The Sixth Extinction

Character(s): Gabriel "Sylar" Gray and Claire Bennet
Summary: Building 26 is never shut down. No one convinces the president that it's best to just drop the matter of evolved humans, and Danko is given cart blanche to deal with the super-powered threat as he sees fit. In the next century the Evolved are hunted to the brink of extinction, either out-right exterminated, or imprisoned and exploited for their ability. The number of specials used in this way grows fewer and fewer as time and mishaps progress, but one type is still coveted above all. Exterminating a regenerator is exceedingly difficult, anyway...
Status: In progress/PRIVATE

"yeah... thought that..." Claire muttered under her breath. "Well, goodnight then." She smiled as best she could without relaying how strange she felt and went to place her cup in the sink before she head off. She knew already that it was going to be a long night.

"Good night, Claire," Sylar returned the smile softly and movedbto gather his bedding for the couch. That really would have been the irony of it. He'd been sleeping on the sofa for near two weeks. It smelled as much of him as the bed did.

He settled down to sleep without much hope to manage it. Alone now he was reflecting on the perfect softness of her lips, the bright glitter of her hazel eyes when she smiled, honestly. He had known, wen he took her ability, that they would live in te same world for the rest of forever. He should have considered what the pain he'd caused her would mean in a century's time, but he'd been too short sighted in spite of reaching for forever. "Damnit..."

Claire laid in that bed for what felt like hours. She stared up at the ceiling, through the darkness, unable to push the memory of that stupid kiss from her mind. It felt strange and part of her felt completely irked by it... but then... there was another part...

Part of her was attracted to the idea of understanding and of course... He was handsome.

"None of that, Claire." The girl chastised herself out loud. Non too please of the the thoughts of sweet lips and gentle touches coming from that man.

He tossed and turned for a while, lost. Finally he had to get back up, walk to the balcony and look out over the city. Cool evening air washed over his bare arms, carressed his neck. He looked down at the distant ground, imagined for more than the first time leaping out and either falling down or soaring sky high. These days he barely thought about abilities. He did everything manually, never flew, tried not to be seen healing. Just the shape shifting, and he hated that.

He wanted to now. Wanted to be free and use everything again, not necessarily to wreck havock, just to be. He shook his head, gripped the guard rail. He could still see the light from the party down the wall. Finally he let go and went back in, slipped himself beneath his covers and tried to shut himself down until the morning.

Claire woke up a few times during the night, startled and unnerved before she remembered both who she was and where she was. It was infinitely easier to remember here than it was anywhere she used to live. It was always the hardest to wake up beside lovers and remember who one was, but here, she didn't have to. She didn't have to lie to the man on the other side of the wall. As she thought to herself, she drifted off a final time, managing to find an easy sleep and a small smile.

"Goodnight, Claire."
Dec. 29th, 2009 04:20 am (UTC)
He woke untested and a bit annoyed, not at Claire, just the feeling. He trudged through the bedroomto the bath, eyes averted as usual and went to wash his face, cold, brisk water helpig him wake.

There was an odd scent in the bathroom though. He noticed as he dried his neck and drew a bracing breath.

It had taken too long for Claire to sleep, so when Sylar woke in the morning, it didn't even register to the girl. She remained passed out in his bed, dreaming about things that would surely make her uncomfortable when she woke. Hands on her body, lips on her skin...
Dec. 29th, 2009 05:09 am (UTC)
He knew the smell... Blood. A good amount and slightly old. He looked about himself in confusion and found nothing, brow furrowing deeper as he looked. He checked under the sink first and when he crouched he knew he was close.

That's when he figured it out andfound the towel. He pulled it from the trash slowly and looked at the dark crimson smear, some of it crusted and flaking, some of if still very damp. What had...?

All it took was the mental question and he saw the scene of hurried mopping up, saw the razor open and edge gleaming redly. He put the towel down and grasped up the antique, the impressions washing over him. The confusion, the disappointment and need to draw blood to center. Slice after slice into perfect creamy thighs that healed again and again.

He dropped the blade with a clatter. "Oh, Claire..."
Dec. 29th, 2009 05:14 am (UTC)
It was the sound of metal on porcelain that woke her. She sat upright and looked around, startled and slightly confused.

"What the hell was that?" Claire asked the silence that surrounded her. She looked at the bathroom door, the sound of movement clueing her in on where the noise must have come from.

"You okay?" She called out to the man surely in the other room.
Dec. 29th, 2009 05:29 am (UTC)
He didn't answer. He didn't know what to do with this. On one hand it didn't matter. She could heal, and he could afford a new towel, easily. On the other, Claire was so alone and isolated, used a self-destructive action as a coping method. Sylar knew what that could be. He'd not cut, but he'd left lesions on his mind by writing a single damning phrase over the walls again and again, long ago, in another age.

She was so unhappy. He'd rescued her from Shenoy's labs, but her mind was still so trapped, And he wasn't helping. He was complicating everything. It felt so hopeless. What could he possibly say to her about this dicovery that wouldn't make things worse??
Dec. 29th, 2009 05:34 am (UTC)
Claire's brows furrowed in concern. Perhaps he fell? It wasn't like Sylar couldn't heal though. Why didn't he respond. A sudden pang of worry shot through her chest like a bolt of lightening.

"Sylar?" She called tentatively, getting out of bed to approach the door. She tapped on it gently. "You okay in there? What was that noise?"
Dec. 29th, 2009 05:43 am (UTC)
"I'm okay," he answered finally, leaning down to pick up the razor. He tossed the towel back in the trash can, sighing softly. He put the razor back down on the counter and walked back to the door and opening it. He looked down at her, features still slightly creased. "What about you? Are you okay? I mean..."
Dec. 29th, 2009 05:53 am (UTC)
"I'm fine. I'll get over it." She said, perhaps her voice a tad too sharp. Of course she wasn't okay, but she wasn't going to tell him that. "It's really not that big of a deal." She lied, the moment they shared yesterday still weighing down upon her. She moved passed him to grab the packet of hair elastics that they had bought at the mall, pulling her long mane to the back of her head.
Dec. 29th, 2009 05:59 am (UTC)
He turned with her and watched her, mouth still set and brow knit. Finally he asked, "Are you familiar with psychometry, and that I have it...?" He wondered if she had known he would see when he picked up the razor? But she had hidden the towel.
Dec. 29th, 2009 06:04 am (UTC)
Claire's brow furrowed as deeply at the brunette's, looking up at him with confusion.

"Psycho-what?" She asked, having absolutely no clue what he was talking about.
Dec. 29th, 2009 06:09 am (UTC)
No, she hadn't meant for him to know that private moment of pain. "I'm able to know the history of objects that I touch. The impressions cast upon them. Especially events that are significant, weighted by strong emotions, or pain..."
Dec. 29th, 2009 06:18 am (UTC)
"Okay..." Claire still wasn't following. She looked at herself in the mirror and placed her hands down on the counter. Her right palm fell upon the closed antique that she suddenly realized... "Oh..."

Her eyes flicked up to Sylar and she knew what he was talking about. A feeling of pure shame washed over her and even though she was able to heal from the most life threatening wounds, her face still drained of color with the realization that he knew what she had done to herself...

"I can explain..."
Dec. 29th, 2009 06:24 am (UTC)
He nodded to her and entered the bathroom again, seating himself on the edge of the tub and looked up at her for the explanation. He wanted to understand. "Okay."
Dec. 29th, 2009 06:35 am (UTC)
Claire stared at him for a moment. She honestly didn't have an explanation on hand. How was she supposed to know he would catch her?

"I... I mean..." She stood there for a few more moments before tears sprung up in her eyes. "I don't know..."
Dec. 29th, 2009 06:45 am (UTC)
"Please don't cry," Sylar reached out a hand and touched her wrist lightly. "I'm not upset, just surprised, and concerned." he let his hand fall away so that the touch was just friendly, not over-invested. "I know the razor can't harm you, but you're hurting, none the less. My fault or not, I don't want that for you, Claire."
Dec. 29th, 2009 06:57 am (UTC)
"I'm not hurting." Claire sniffled, trying to hold back the now torrent of emotions behind her eyes. "I think that's the problem." She moved to sit next to Sylar on the tub, leaning and putting her elbows on her knees.

"You know, after Shenoy was the first real pain that I've felt in almost a century? It was exhilarating. I felt so alive." She looked at him with wet eyes. "I think I was trying to emulate that..."
Dec. 29th, 2009 07:01 am (UTC)
"Did it help?" his tone was genuinely curious, not judgemental or incredulous. He wanted to understand her. People were not always so simple as machines.
Dec. 29th, 2009 07:14 am (UTC)
"No." And with that one word, Claire burst into tears, sobs shaking her body as she curled into herself, covering her face out of shame and embarrassment. "I'm sorry..." She really didn't mean to be so upset, it was just a touchy spot for her. "It's just... I'm not human!"
Dec. 29th, 2009 07:29 am (UTC)
Sylar frowned deeply. His hand reached out again and touched her hair, petting softly only in hopes of being able to sooth. A long time ago he wouldn't have risked the gesture, but he'd had a number of girlfriends between then and now. "Yes, you are, Claire. A very unique human with a little extra information in her DNA, but you're no less a human being than a child born without legs, or with sicle cell anemia, or a knack for theoretical physics or marathon running. There are a lot of ways people can be born singularly different. That doesn't make them, and certainly not you, other than a human being. ...And they all cope with the difficulties differently."
Dec. 29th, 2009 07:32 am (UTC)
"Can you fix it?" She asked, looking up at him with pleading eyes.
