The Sixth Extinction

Character(s): Gabriel "Sylar" Gray and Claire Bennet
Summary: Building 26 is never shut down. No one convinces the president that it's best to just drop the matter of evolved humans, and Danko is given cart blanche to deal with the super-powered threat as he sees fit. In the next century the Evolved are hunted to the brink of extinction, either out-right exterminated, or imprisoned and exploited for their ability. The number of specials used in this way grows fewer and fewer as time and mishaps progress, but one type is still coveted above all. Exterminating a regenerator is exceedingly difficult, anyway...
Status: In progress/PRIVATE

"Except I'm partial to the benefactor, not the ward," Sylar answered, unpacking. "Maybe someday I'll use Wayne as my alias instead." He took some of his own more comfortable clothes out to lounge in until they had to dress for the evening.
Dec. 21st, 2009 11:44 pm (UTC)
Claire returned in her pink sweats and white tee looking ever the young teen that Sylar would remember. She was smiling and her long, curly hair was pulled back into a high ponytail off her face. It was one of the very few moments that the blond allowed her youth to truly show. It was difficult to make friends and find work when one was one-hundred and twenty-one while looking no older that eighteen.

"Wanna watch a movie or something?" She asked, plopping herself down on the living room couch.
Dec. 22nd, 2009 12:03 am (UTC)
"Sure," Sylar returned in his own tank and black sweats, settling down to find something for them. "What about a mystery? Sherlock Holmes? There's a surround-vision verion of Hound of the Baskervilles that is actually pretty fantastic, for a newer film."
Dec. 22nd, 2009 12:17 am (UTC)
"Sure." Claire smiled. "I like the guy who played Watson. You know, that cute whats-his-name." She grinned, standing to head to the kitchen while Sylar prepared the movie. She found and popped a bowl of popcorn for the two of them, jumping right back on the couch next to him, pulling her legs underneath her bottom and placing the bowl between the two of their hips to that they could share.
Dec. 22nd, 2009 10:11 am (UTC)
Once she'd settled in Sylar stole a bite of the popcorn, turned out the lights and began the film. From The special projectors that made up the holographic system came the three dimensional titles that floated before them and eventually gave way to a lush reimagining of Holmes' Britain. Of course all the principal action took place within the space in front of them, but if one wished they could glance behind and see the rest of a room or the moores, and of course now and then the set-up was used to create the suspenseful effect of having whatever might be sneaking up on a character sneak up on the audience, too. In the case of the hound, this was expertly employed.
Dec. 22nd, 2009 10:31 pm (UTC)
Claire was entranced, the technology two years more advanced than she remembered. She kept looking around at te full surround of it.

"The last I remember, it only came to about halfway. This is amazing." She smiled.
Dec. 22nd, 2009 10:48 pm (UTC)
"And then some one had the brilliant idea of putting a second set behind the audience," Sylar smiled. "They effectively create two films, but the secondary is mostly background and minor action. It only adds a little to the production time. But the effect is phenomenal. Horror movies use it best, and action films. Some productions aren't even bothering with it, but it's new. Still catching on." He munched popcorn and shivered pleasantly at he threatening rumble of the hound's growl, somewhere out of sight. "But I love the way it immerses us in the world of whatever we're watching. One advance I've managed to appreciate and keep up with."
Dec. 22nd, 2009 11:32 pm (UTC)
"It's cool." Claire grinned, putting a hand on Sylar's thigh to push herself up, craning her head to look for the hound.
Dec. 23rd, 2009 01:25 am (UTC)
Sylar glanced aside at the girl, skin warming under the grip of her hand. She really was pretty and so vibrant. He'd always thought that. He'd resented her in the beginning, another evil, blonde cheerleader as far as he was concerned, raised by the man who'd condemned him to a life lived as a demon, so surely she must be awful as well.

But she kept surprising him. Even now, after everything, she was friendly and happy. Maybe he wasn't forgiven yet, but perhaps that wouldn't matter, eventually. He'd had passionate feelings for people he held in contempt as well. The emotions present in his thoughts changed with the circumstances.

For now he just kept quiet in the dark, and prayed her hand didn't slide higher.
Dec. 23rd, 2009 02:05 am (UTC)
The hand didn't upwards, but downwards, eventually resting on his knee as she twisted back to sit down. "Too bad we don't have time to watch a good action flick." She smiled. "I'd love to see some explosions."
Dec. 23rd, 2009 07:41 am (UTC)
"Well, perhaps tomorrow? It's not as though we have anywhere pressing to be," he let out a silent sigh as her hand headed away from more sensitive regions. He felt a pleasant warmth without being too wound up, no fear of physical reactions being discovered. "The building thinks I'm writing a thesis on turn-of-the-millenium history, so I do whatever I please with my time."
Dec. 23rd, 2009 07:54 am (UTC)
"Sounds good to me." The blond grinned, patting Sylar one more time on the leg before retreating her hand completely, laying it with the other on her lap. She was just acting natural and natural for Claire was affectionately friendly. SHe had no idea that she might have been breaking boundaries or comfort zones. Once the movie was finished and the credits were rolling, the former cheerleader stood and stretched, smiling brightly.

"We should get ready. Don't want to be too late. Plus, I want to do up my hair and I don't care how advanced those stupid hair thingys get, up-do's still take forever!" She chuckled before heading off to the bedroom to grab her things and once bag was in hand, to the bathroom to do her hair and make-up.
Dec. 23rd, 2009 08:29 am (UTC)
While she used the bathroom Sylar styled himself in the mirror over his dresser. Narrow black dress shoes with gunmetal bars over the bridge of the foot, slate argyle socks, the slim black pants, purple shirt and the tie bar that matched the fittings on his shoes. He didn't have enough length to do anything with his hair yet, just used a straight razor to clean up the lines around his neck and a trimmer to get his stubble to a rougish, but not unkempt look. He'd been here almost five years, claiming to be 28, not far from where he'd honestly left off.

He finished off the outfit with an 'antique' wrist watch, something his neighbors found charming. They sometimes teased him about being born in the wrong era, given his fascination with the past. They had no idea.

Needless to say, he looked very fine well by the time Claire finished making herself up, and was in the kitchen picking out a gift champaign while the blonde dressed.
Dec. 23rd, 2009 08:46 am (UTC)
Claire took a significantly longer time getting ready than Sylar, taking great care in her appearance. This would be her first trek back out into the social world, not counting the mall, which wasn't very social to begin with. She carefully pulled her long curly main up from her face, pinning it slightly off to the side so that her curls fell over one shoulder. Her make-up was clean, bright and full of pinks and calm caramels, accentuating her now healthy, sun-kissed skin.

The dress that she was so excited about finding was slim and form-fitting. The silky fabric clung to her curves and accentuated her lean, and satisfyingly healthy frame. The fabric was a bright blue that brought out both the glow of her skin and the green in her eyes, her eyeshadow a perfect match to the ensemble. Her shoes were light and strapped, the heel high enough that her true height could be slightly disguised. As a final touch, Claire put a lovely blue flower a the top of her billowing ponytail.

She stepped out of the bathroom, a bright smile on her face and when she passed the full length mirror in Sylar's bedroom, she stopped to admire herself a moment. She hadn't felt this good about her appearance in over two years and she was very excited about showing off a little.

Claire made her way to the kitchen and upon seeing the brunette, grinned. "You look handsome." She smiled and did a little spin for her uncanny friend. "So, what do you think?"
Dec. 23rd, 2009 08:56 am (UTC)
Sylar took her in for a quiet moment, just sort of drinking her in like sunlight. She was radient, and he could tell that she knew it. "Wow... You look amazing, Claire." He blinked his bright brandy eyes, stunned by her momentarily. "Very much an incarnation of summer."
Dec. 23rd, 2009 08:59 am (UTC)
"Thanks!" She laughed, feeling all pretty and bubbly. Nothing could ruin her night now. Claire felt just as amazing as she certainly looked. "So, tell me about your... well, Sean's neighbors. I'm sure they are an interesting and expensive group given where you live."
Dec. 23rd, 2009 09:27 am (UTC)
"I'm sure Natasha will take great pleasure in introducing you to everyone, but they are indeed well off people, though not always interesting. I can't possibly list off everyone, but on this floor, other than Tash, there is Kreiger who's nothing but a trust-fund play boy, Helen and Julia, who own and opperate a chain of up-scale pet hotels in major cities across the US and one in Paris, Art, a programmer at one of the big companies, I can never remember, and Kit and Mika, a musician couple who spend half their time here and half in LA. Usually the cold half, so they might be around." He settled on a bottle and wrapped it up in colored celophane, tying it off near the cork and arranging a spray out of the gathered plastic.
Dec. 23rd, 2009 09:32 am (UTC)
"Can't wait." Claire grinned. "So, in case you want to play the gentleman and introduce me, I usually tell people I'm a history major with a focus in turn of the century culture. It helps that I was there for most of it." She smiled, knowing that Sylar had taken the same route. "I go to UCLA and my family lives in Boston. I'm just here visiting Sean. Okay?" She wanted to make sure they had their stories straight before they got into trouble. No need getting caught the first night out. "Speaking of my supposed cousin, where is he?"
Dec. 23rd, 2009 09:43 am (UTC)
"Germany. It doesn't matter how good telecommunications gets, people like to meet their partners face to face. I think there's a subconscious sense of having the insurance of a hostage if things go south, even though no one would actually detain a man. But it means my friend in mergers and acquisitions can be where ever I need him whenever I do." he lead the way out and 'held' the door for her, even if it was automatic.
Dec. 23rd, 2009 09:48 am (UTC)
Claire smiled at Sylar as he held the automatic door, but before she made it all the way out. "Ooh! Wait a sec." She exclaimed and scrambled back into the apartment, returning moments later with the clean dress and shoes. "I almost forgot to bring this back. Silly of me really." She smiled and happily followed the brunette down the hall to Natasha's home.
Dec. 23rd, 2009 10:13 am (UTC)
The brunette grinned at her thoughtfulness and escorted her down the hall to a door that already stood open, music pouring out of it along with conversation. Their hostess was keeping her eyes out for new arrivals though and the moment they were inside a slender young woman of mixed races decended upon them, high-pitched sounds of glee errupting from her grinning, sparkling lips.

The Eurasian girl had her sable hair pulled up in calculatedly messy buns on either side of her head and wore a festive pink dress that glittered like her lipgloss. She managed to pull off 'over the top' by merit of her adorable brand of prettiness and the fact that she was indeed a runway model, a human coatrack that could make any concept something wearable. "Lexie!!!" she practically pounced Sylar, who returned the friendly embrace with a warm hug.

"Heya, Tash. You look gorgeous, as always," he managed to step back and gesture Claire's way. "Sean's out of town again, of course, so I have the pleasure of escorting Sandra tonight." As though he didn't know she hadn't been mentioned by name.

"Sandra? Oh! You must be Sean's cousin! Wow! Hi! I'm Natasha, but please, call me Tash," she pulled Claire straight into a friendly hug. The girl was all about making friends and helping everyone get along.
Dec. 23rd, 2009 10:18 am (UTC)
"Uh, hi!" Claire laughed, hugging the complete stranger with a brightly amused smile. "It's a pleasure to finally meet you. I brought back your dress. Thank you so much for letting me borrow it. You have no idea how sick I was of rolling the cuffs up on Sean's pajama pants." She grinned, knowing that the petite woman would understand.
Dec. 23rd, 2009 10:31 am (UTC)
"Dont even mention it! I have definitely lost travel bags before, but girl! That dress is sitzen!" she took her own things gratefully, excused herself briefly and scurried off to put them away. Her apartment was bright, feminine and emmaculately clean. The dining table was covered with trays of delicious and artistic little snacks from all manner of cuisine and a a young man was mixing cocktails at the bar that separated the kitchen from the rest of the apartment.

Sylar smiled brightly at the compliment Claire had received, and already more eyes were drifting their way, taking both new arrivals in with surprise, curiosity and approval.
Dec. 23rd, 2009 10:36 am (UTC)
"She's actually really adorable." Claire laughed as Tash bustled off, wrapping her arm around Sylar's, pulling him close to herself to talk to him, looking around the room curiously. "So you have to tell me who's who. Kreiger is obviously the guy who been staring at me since we walked in, but who are the rest of these people?"
Dec. 23rd, 2009 11:02 am (UTC)
He laughed as she recognized Sylar's least favorite neighbor right off the bat. "Well, Helen is the woman with the cropped hair and the pantsuit. Her partner Julia is there, the redhead in the yellow dress. She's talking to one of our upstairs neighbors, Dylan. He's in marketing," the brunette lead her further inside so they could see and be seen and eventually mingle. First he dropped the champaign off with the bartender.

"And this genius of the bottle is Max, not an official resident, but his skill with a shaker and generous pour has earned him a place in all our hearts," he spoke more to Max than Claire as he flattered the bartender, who gave him a cheeky grin and a wink to Claire.

"Another summer of love arrives without your man here, Alex, I'm starting to think Sean thinks he's too good for you," Max lifted his eyebrows playfully and Sylar rolled his eyes at the good natured insinuation. No one lived in the closet any more, which was why Sylar's situation with his phantom roommate confused everyone. "And yet here you are with a gorgeous new companion. Perhaps he's run off, feeling scorned?"

"These are the world's mysteries. Max, this is Sandra. Sandra, Max."
