The Sixth Extinction

Character(s): Gabriel "Sylar" Gray and Claire Bennet
Summary: Building 26 is never shut down. No one convinces the president that it's best to just drop the matter of evolved humans, and Danko is given cart blanche to deal with the super-powered threat as he sees fit. In the next century the Evolved are hunted to the brink of extinction, either out-right exterminated, or imprisoned and exploited for their ability. The number of specials used in this way grows fewer and fewer as time and mishaps progress, but one type is still coveted above all. Exterminating a regenerator is exceedingly difficult, anyway...
Status: In progress/PRIVATE

At least this time he had armloads of other shopping bags, so he looked like a man with a purpose. At least he wasn't stuck holding a purse, yet. That was still in one of the bags.

So while Claire went about her feminine business Sylar waited up around the counter looking innocently at the impulse-buy tubes of lip gloss and mini-perfumes. One-hundred years hadn't done much to change a group of products that had been around for thousands.

Once she was refitted and her bra collection replaced Sylar condenced some of their purchases into a more sensible arrangement of shopping bags and asked, "Feel like hitting the food court?"
Dec. 16th, 2009 11:35 pm (UTC)
"Oh, yes please." Claire beamed, touching her tummy as she spoke. "I'm starving." Though, she really wasn't. Sylar had kept her well fed for the past week and a half, thankfully packing on the pounds she needed to look human again. "I could really go for a burger." She smiled, knowing that if there was still lip gloss, there were still flattened patties of beef.

"So what was up with that colorful holocard on your counter this morning?" Claire asked, her curiosity getting the better of her. "Looked pretty important... or at least just pretty."

"Oh, yeah! I forgot to mention. Natasha invited us over for a cocktail party this evening, if you're interested and up to it. She thinks apartment buildings where no one knows each other are dismal and dangerous, so she puts these things together every couple months. This is her, 'Just for the heck of it Summer Fun' themed event," he answered as he lead the way toward the burger stand.
Dec. 17th, 2009 03:16 am (UTC)
"Oh! I need to get a new dress then!" Claire exclaimed happily. "And we have to get you something snazzy too." She grinned.
Dec. 17th, 2009 04:49 am (UTC)
A grin broke out across Sylar's face as Claire agreed so readily and enthusiastically. He hadn't expected it. Thought she might balk at being seen with him socially. Now that seemed not the case and he couldn't be more pleased. "Well then, after lunch we'll have to drop these off at the car and hit the boutiques."
Dec. 17th, 2009 05:15 am (UTC)
"Totally." Of course, this felt like a nice game of pretend for Claire. It was what her entire life was now, but now there was somebody in on the play. She really enjoyed that. She could make up this life, but there was still somebody who remembered who she really was. If she wasn't careful, Claire would probably find herself addicted to the drug of truth that Sylar provided.
Dec. 17th, 2009 10:48 am (UTC)
She wasn't the only one, and Sylar had been craving it for a long time. He played pretend in short bouts. His characters had rarely lasted more than a week or two before the jig was up or he started having an identity crisis. It had taken him many years after the wars ended to learn to live a single lie without freaking out.

Even now it was a tenuous thing and his cover identities were always aquainted with a version of himself so that he never had to shapeshift for longer than a few hours out of any given month. Sylar was always friends with jetsetters, international businessmen and men with distant, delicate families. He himself often claimed to be a reclusive writer or artist or scholar. It helped cover for his oddities and anachronisms.

"Great, I'm sure she's eager to meet you. I said you're Sean's neice, which I know you weren't keen on, but he's traveling right now so you needn't play up the attachment. People will be infinitely more interested about you," he strolled up to the service counter but stood aside to let her order.
Dec. 17th, 2009 05:17 pm (UTC)
Claire stepped up and rattled off her wants, happy to get some grease into her belly. She missed eating crappy food. She let Sylar order and stood to the side, watching the boy behind the counter for a moment. He looked about her age, give or take one hundred years, and he seemed to really notice her. She gave him a bright smile as he took the tall brunette's order, which flustered the boy a bit.
Dec. 18th, 2009 10:56 am (UTC)
Sylar watched the boy, confused at first as to why he was having trouble with the order, until he glanced aside to see Claire beaming at the kid. A frown crossed the brunette's face as he felt a wave of irritation roll through him, felt a sudden urge to snap at the kid to pay attention to what he was doing.

It was odd, and minor enough that he could exercise the impulse control needed not to bite the kid's head off, but he had to wonder about and finished up the transaction without much chatter, in case he proved weaker than expected. Odd that he should be so ready to help Claire socialize at an up-coming party, but he felt a protective twinge in front of this stranger... This obviously utterly unthreatening stranger.

Dec. 18th, 2009 03:09 pm (UTC)
As they stood there and waited for their food, Claire watched Sylar carefully.

"You okay?" She asked, not terribly concerned, but she could tell something was up. "You look pissed."

It wasn't too obvious to the blond, but perhaps what she'd done would have been considered flirting. She certainly wasn't doing it on purpose. The boy was cute, but young and stupid, like she was when she was his age. She was just more pleased that boys were noticing her again.
Dec. 19th, 2009 12:15 am (UTC)
"I'm okay, I just... Started thinking about things, suddenly. I don't know why. Sometimes my mind just hyjack my train of thought without warning," he shook his head and tried to be rid of that odd feeling. Of course he would get jealous and protective. Claire was rare and vital, but he had to be careful about managing those feelings. They could become dangerous if expressed inappropriately. The blonde certainly wouldn't appreciate him gettig territorial.
Dec. 19th, 2009 12:54 am (UTC)
Claire raised an eyebrow. "What sort of 'things?'" she asked, complete with air quotation marks. It was more a question of his dark expression than anything else. It was that hooded thinking that she didn't like. Her goal was to het into his head before anything got too out of hand.
Dec. 19th, 2009 05:02 am (UTC)
"Shenoy," he lied easily and quietly while th boy was turned away. "And the thought that everything good and normal could be taken away if I don't walk on egg shells. I don't like it."
Dec. 19th, 2009 05:20 am (UTC)
"Oh." Claire nodded in understanding, getting why he had that dark and scary look now. "You're brain does that too, huh?" She smiled brightly, taking her drink off the counter while she waited for her order to come up. Her nerves were instantly settled and she was back to friendly Claire again. "Sometimes, I'll think of the most random crap. No clue where it comes from."
Dec. 19th, 2009 06:00 am (UTC)
"it's not as though the paranoia's unwarranted to some degree, but it's almost like panic attacks some times, except my instinctive response isn't flight, it's fight, so I end up pissed when I don't mean to be. Usually I'm alone though," and all of that was true enough. "No one to call me out on my brooding." he took his own drink and order when it arrived, ticking his head toward the tables.
Dec. 19th, 2009 01:42 pm (UTC)
Claire grabbed her food and followed, nodding again. They picked a table that was out of the way, so that most people couldn't over hear them.

"I get it. Trust me. I feel alone constantly and everyone that I used to be able to confide in is dead and buried. It sucks." Of course, now she had him and he had Claire which she knew she shouldn't get to comfortable with. Once she was ready to stand alone, she would.
Dec. 20th, 2009 05:44 am (UTC)
Sylar was quiet a moment, picking at his French fries a bit, lost in his own thoughts and her words briefly. "Have you been in love since... Since whenever?" he asked with a soft, sort of distant voice. He had no thoughts for the future too far ahead, so he didn't think about her leaving. Whatever moment he was in might go on forever as far as Sylar was concerned. Change was inevitable, but he took what was in fron of him at face value. Given the fluid nature of his life, the brunette couldn't afford to make stiffly structured plans.
Dec. 20th, 2009 06:15 am (UTC)
"Since the world died around me?" Claire asked sarcastically. "No." She answered even more quickly than her quip. "Of course not. How could I ever connect with anyone on that level if all they'll do is use me or turn me in for a reward." She shook her head. "No."

She had come close a few times, but that was just ignorant of her and eventually it would come to a point where she would be hiding her true self, causing a rift between her and a potential mate.

"Have you?" Claire turned the question around, raising an eyebrow in curiosity. Had Sylar ever been in love for that matter? He honestly didn't seem the type to waste his time on such trivial things like love.
Dec. 20th, 2009 11:13 am (UTC)
He regretted the question now that it had been turned around on him, that distant look becoming even further away as he debated the answering. "I have loved," he said after a moment, like he was confessing something that might be a sin. "But been in love? No. No one has ever known me well enough, and it's not as though they would if they did."

Love. It was all Sylar wanted. To be worthy of being noticed and held dear. Both his genetic predisposition and his twisted upbringing made him incredibly ill-equipped to find and keep it.
Dec. 20th, 2009 08:53 pm (UTC)
"Who?" Claire's eyes widened in curiosity. Who could have... "Oh wait... Elle, right?" She nodded, popping a fry in her mouth. "I remember that. My dad told me about it. o one since then though?"
Dec. 21st, 2009 12:18 am (UTC)
"Hm?" Sylar blinked at Claire and her mention of Elle. Sylar hadnt been thinking that far back butnow his mind flew back to near a century. "No... No, actually, Elle and I were in love. Briefly. A short, blissful span of time when we forgave each other and trusted one another... And she knew me better than any body." he held his cup two-handed, fingertips figdeting in the condensation.
Dec. 21st, 2009 01:17 am (UTC)
"Oh... really?" Claire seemed a little surprised by that, actually almost choking on her soda as she took a sip. "I mean... if that's not who you were talking about... you were in love hmm? But who else?" Now the blond was totally taken off guard. There seemed to be a lot more to Sylar than she knew or conceived.
Dec. 21st, 2009 02:28 am (UTC)
"...Kailee, a museum guide in Phillidelphia. A literature major in New Orleans, Caroline. And Olivia, who danced at Juilliard. None of them ever knew me, of course. I made up all manner of stories to hide behind, but they were beautiful and kind and trusting. I never could decide if lying to them was another evil or just an unfortunate necessity. They had no idea they were with a monster," his tone implied he understood that was disgusting and wrong, "but on the other hand they never knew they were with a monster," and when he repeated it he made it sound like perhaps he'd done them a kindness by protecting them from his darkness, so maybe it wasn't so bad, a white-lie kind of deceit.
Dec. 21st, 2009 02:37 am (UTC)
"Oh." Claire frowned. She clearly had no idea what Sylar was like. "I... Well..." She couldn't understand how the brunett could grow close enough to these woman, but she... "I'm sure you were very kind to them." The blond said with a frown, lost in her own thoughts at the moment.
Dec. 21st, 2009 03:39 am (UTC)
Sylar nodded slightly. "Things weren't always perfect, but it was nice while it lasted." he smiled faintly, an expression that expressed more sorrow and regret than it did any joy. He missed them, missed the feelings felt when he had them, and hadn't found anyone to fill that gap in his life since.
