The Sixth Extinction

Character(s): Gabriel "Sylar" Gray and Claire Bennet
Summary: Building 26 is never shut down. No one convinces the president that it's best to just drop the matter of evolved humans, and Danko is given cart blanche to deal with the super-powered threat as he sees fit. In the next century the Evolved are hunted to the brink of extinction, either out-right exterminated, or imprisoned and exploited for their ability. The number of specials used in this way grows fewer and fewer as time and mishaps progress, but one type is still coveted above all. Exterminating a regenerator is exceedingly difficult, anyway...

"Jeans. I want jeans. I've never wanted jeans more in my entire existence." Which was saying something. Claire laughed heartily and shook her head, her curls falling around her shoulders. "I don't think I want to wear another dress for as long as I... well, maybe not as long as I live." She giggle, winking at Sylar and taking his arm. "This way." And she pulled him off to some department store. Hopefully one with the ever popular, never out of style, jeans.

"I think you look very pretty, what's wrong with dresses?" he followed after, walking down the wide, sparce isles of the very streamlined department store. She was only going to find premium denim with the best possible fit and Sylar had no problem shelling out for it. He didn't always get to live so large, but when he did, he took advantage of it.

"I'll get some dresses." Claire laughed. She was just sick of the SAME dress. It was easy for her to find what she wanted. She was totally into style and had even done some popular research on the internet about it. She knew what was hot.

"What about this?" She asked, holding up a combo of jeans and shirt, smiling brightly.
Dec. 12th, 2009 06:17 am (UTC)
"I think you're going to make whatever you wear look fantastic," he told her, looking at the outfit approvingly. "not to mention you've obviously paid attention to the style reports. I always just sort of hope black is always acceptable as black."

Claire rolled her eyes with a grin and vanished, grabbing a few more things and then headed to the changing room to try things on. The woman assisting customers watched Sylar carefully for some odd reason, probably wondering why a man looking so tall, dark and imposing would be traveling around with a bubbly blond like Claire.

"Do you need any help?" She asked the girl, a plastic smile on her face.

"No, we're good." Claire nodded. "But thanks!"
Dec. 12th, 2009 08:04 am (UTC)
Sylar chuckled warmly at Claire's enthusiasm and found a seat for himself near the dressing rooms. He wasn't sure if the blonde was going to model for him or not, but he made sure to be on hand anyway. Eventually he caught sight of the concerned saleswoman and gave her a wink, complimenting her own outfit and generally chatting her up to keep her from getting to worried about him, though Claire's own high spirits certainly went a long way toward that. "When was the last time you got to indulge your inner shop-a-holic?" he called down the small hall, grinning.
Dec. 12th, 2009 04:17 pm (UTC)
"What feels like forever." Claire groaned from inside her little cubicle, trying on this and that, spinning in front of the mirror. There were a few things that she liked easily enough, jeans and t-shirts, casual and comfortable wear. It was when she moved on to the more showy clothes, Sylar got a little show.

"How's this?" She asked him, stepping out wearing a short white almost tennis skirt and a cute frilly button-down that emphasized the hell out of her cleavage. She was actually really concerned about it. Perhaps its was too much. All leg and tit and not enough class.
Dec. 13th, 2009 10:45 am (UTC)
"Um... What doesn't get me shot?" Sylar grinned, somewhere between cheeky and sheepish, doing his best to be a gentleman about it, but damn! "I think perhaps paired with other garments? But the skirt is... It's really nice." It definitely harkened back to Claire's cheerleading days and he couldn't say that didn't suit her.
Dec. 13th, 2009 11:32 am (UTC)
"That's what I thought." Claire frowned, looking down at herself. "No matter. I didn't really like the shirt, so I'm glad the skirt at least looks nice." She grinned, disappearing again. This continued through every outfit, the blond taking what Sylar had to say to heart. She was finding it easier to talk to him and actually listen to him opinion. He was sort of sweet.

Once she'd exhausted all of the options, she came out with her arms full of the clothes that made the grade, a big grin on her face. "I think this is it. We should also stop at the lingerie store too. I think, well... I need a knew bra." She blushed.
Dec. 13th, 2009 11:31 pm (UTC)
"Some how I got that impression." Sylar smiled and helped her carry everything to the cashier. "Youre looking great now that you have your health back. Glowing."
Dec. 14th, 2009 05:06 am (UTC)
"Oh really?" Claire raised an eyebrow. "Been keeping track have you?"
Dec. 14th, 2009 07:33 am (UTC)
"Not keeping track, just-!!" Sylar flustered, his cheeks colouring brightly as he realized how that sounded and to whom. He was silent for a few embarrassed heartbeats, then retorted with an experimental forwardness, "You just filled that particular top rather well and I couldn't help but notice."
Dec. 14th, 2009 05:57 pm (UTC)
"Checking out my boobs are we?" Claire prodded again, trying her best to look shocked, but in actuality, she was flattered and found Sylar's awkwardness pretty adorable. "Just because you helped me get better doesn't mean you get to oogle me." She said, hoping that the joke was hidden underneath her stern voice.
Dec. 14th, 2009 10:47 pm (UTC)
"I think it's the least advantage I should enjoy as your knight in pitch black armor," he replied with an equal sort of mock seriousness. "Though I've always been more of a leg-man."
Dec. 14th, 2009 11:04 pm (UTC)
"Oh, so it was the skirt then?" Claire asked, her smile breaking through. " Well, that's okay. Better my legs then staring at my tits." She laughed.
Dec. 15th, 2009 05:25 am (UTC)
"This is shooting myself in the foot, but how is it better? I'm still oogling and objectifying part of your body, right?" he raised an eyebrow, wondering at the bizarre logic of women. There were any number of places on Claire's body that he found more interesting and attractive than her chest, like the delicate curve of her neck, her petite waist and small of her back, the little dip between the round of her bottom and the back of her lean thigh. These were infinitely more intimate and feminine to him than the oft-displayed swell of breasts. But then Sylar wasn't a typical simple minded male.
Dec. 15th, 2009 06:12 am (UTC)
"I'm teasing." Claire finally admitted, placing her purchases on the counter for the man there to scan. "Don't get yourself too bunched up in knots." She laughed, giving the brunette a wink before the clerk tallied up everything and read off the price.
Dec. 15th, 2009 06:45 am (UTC)
"Oh, my god!" Sylar exclaimed in mock-shock at the final amount and put a hand to his chest as though fearing an attack. He just laughed it off after though and handed his cash card over without further flinching. "Id make some joke about women and shopping, but I drop as much on my own wardrobe sometimes," simple but very tasteful. That's how he liked the contents of his closet, especially where suits were concerned.
Dec. 15th, 2009 07:03 am (UTC)
"Oh hush." She said as she playfully smacked him on the shoulder. "And I lost everything I owned..." She paused and looked over at the clerk. "I was really sick. the medical bills were ridiculous." Claire explained to the man behind the counter, who nodded in understanding.

"Anyways," The girl continued. "You offered."
Dec. 15th, 2009 11:03 am (UTC)
"That I did," Sylar smiled and finished up the transaction, taking the bags and packages from the clerk once done, and as they walked away he continued privately, "There's a philosophy that says if one save a person's life they become responsible for it. I think that's even more so true if one has ruined that life, previously."
Dec. 15th, 2009 12:17 pm (UTC)
That was the first time either of them had mentioned their past involvement and for the first time, Claire hadn't bristled, at least, not visibly. She didn't look at the brunette for a moment, her eyes remaining on the path her feet were taking. She wasn't quite sure how to approach the subject of what Sylar did to her. She was still mad, but he had shown her great kindness in the past week and some change.

"I don't think you ruined my life." Claire spoke softly, still not looking up. "I think a lot of people had a hand in how I turned out." It wasn't forgiveness or acceptance, but it was certainly a start. She was finally acknowledging that Sylar may not be the sole reason her life was so complicated.
Dec. 16th, 2009 05:02 am (UTC)
"And one of them was mine," Sylar admitted, voice just as soft and careful, as though something delicate hung in the air. "I knew pain, fear, and the feelings of rage and helplessness that come from violation, things I should have never wished on anyone else, but did. Wished and carried out. I know a couple pairs of new jeans and waffle breakfasts don't undo any of it, but if it can help you heal faster after someone else does much the same, well then... I think I have an obligation, for those reasons and simply because fate lead us here."
Dec. 16th, 2009 05:29 am (UTC)
"Well, the waffles do help." Claire gave a shy smile, her eyes shining up at the brunette. "And I don't know how to forgive you. I know it was a long time ago, but you are right when you agree you had a hand and that you owe me. I just don't know what you owe me." The blond looked down and shrugged. "It should be an apology, but for some reason, it doesn't feel good enough."
Dec. 16th, 2009 05:46 am (UTC)
"Well, if you figure it out," he offered quietly, not sure he could ever do anything and alright wth that. They were at a good place. He might not be forgiven, but he could make her smile, and given where she'd just been, that meant a hell of a lot.
Dec. 16th, 2009 10:40 pm (UTC)
Claire nodded, but left the conversation at that. They really had been in a good place the past few days. She didn't want to ruin the mood by bringing up things that upset her so much.

She stepped into the lingerie store and luckily, the woman working was not the same as the one before. That would have ben weird. She approached the counter to get measured and left Sylar to his own devices, sure that this was a bit more awkward than the first time they'd been in.
