The Sixth Extinction

Character(s): Gabriel "Sylar" Gray and Claire Bennet
Summary: Building 26 is never shut down. No one convinces the president that it's best to just drop the matter of evolved humans, and Danko is given cart blanche to deal with the super-powered threat as he sees fit. In the next century the Evolved are hunted to the brink of extinction, either out-right exterminated, or imprisoned and exploited for their ability. The number of specials used in this way grows fewer and fewer as time and mishaps progress, but one type is still coveted above all. Exterminating a regenerator is exceedingly difficult, anyway...
Status: In progress/PRIVATE

"I just want you to know that I'm not her. The blond who thinks she's almighty and untouchable. I know those girls. You actually killed one when you came after me. You know the bitch I punch... yeah..." Claire looked away. She never wanted to be like Jackie. She never wanted to be that girl who thought that every man should dote on her whims.

Sylar nodded, thinking into the far distant past. He closed his eyes and let strains of a hundred year old argument return to him. He hadn't heard all of it, mostly just Jackie's outraged side of things. "I think you're a menace... Get a grip, Claire!" Something to that effect, and Sylar had relished that death, in spite of chosing the wrong target.

"Sorry I stole your thunder," he opened his eyes and smirked a bit morbidly. "I could never stand girl like that. I never even tried to talk to them or anything so foolish, but it didn't matter. They'd come after me anyway, or sic their meathead boyfriends on me, not that any of the jocks needed much promting."
Dec. 9th, 2009 07:29 am (UTC)
"Well I'm not them." Claire looked angry now, a little frustrated that Sylar was trivializing something so traumatic in her youth and having the same hair-trigger reaction to her. "Just remember that. I don't go after anyone for no reason. I'm not a bully."
Dec. 9th, 2009 07:41 am (UTC)
"Okay," Sylar nodded his understanding of that much, but he was unsure as to why she was getting upset. "I believe you, and I told you, I realize that I over reacted. I'm not... Well, my temper has always been a problem for me," he tried to explain. "We were doing so much better, earlier."

He rubbed on of his temples and looked away through the window as the scenery whipped by, feeling awkward and uncomfortable again. He didn't know what to do with it.

Claire said nothing after that, crossing her arms and watching the world go by as well. Once they arrived back at Sylar's apartment building, she helped him move the bags and quickly brought them into his bedroom, shutting herself in the bathroom to change into the pajamas he thoughtfully bought her.

Until that very moment, Claire had no idea how comforting having panties on was.

She crept back out of the bathroom, and took to the bed, feeling both drain and a little sad that the day hadn't turned out as nice as it looked it might.

Sylar decided it was best to leave her alone for now. He put some quiet classical music on for himself and just laid down on the sofa, finding himself in the same miserable quandry when he'd thought he might have a second chance as part of the Company, as a Petrelli. He wanted to reach out and find a connection, an understanding there, but found himself too broken to manage it. Claire had probably hit it on the head, and tears even managed to slip from his eyes, wounds still raw from his recent loss and betrayal, he was destined to remain alone.

Claire curled in a ball for a while, eventually finding her way under Sylar's covers. She laid there for a long while, wondering if maybe she should sleep or if she should try to talk about it. Her decision was to just forget about it. There was no need to go developing any sort of friendly feelings for Sylar. He'd just ruin it. So, without a goodnight, she rolled over and tucked her head beneath the covers, calling it a night.

Sylar stayed quiet for a while, until his own self-pitying began to grate on him. He was supposed to be above this, Goddamn it! He wiped his eyes and face, growling softly in frustration with himself, but if he was completely honest the recent relationship disaster hadn't had the old effect of driving him away from other people. He just missed terribly what he'd lost and was frightened he wouldn't get it back again. That even if he did, it would never mean anything, always based on lies.

Claire was some one he could be honest with, if he could just get her to see he could be a human being, most of the time. That his past was behind him. The only killing he'd done recently had been Shenoy and even Claire hadn't faulted him that.

He rose from the couch, went to the kitchen and began pulling out cartons, bottles, dishes and spoons, the blonde's indifference be damned. If she could stay mad enough to turn down hot fudge sauce and cherries then he really didn't understand girls. In only a few moments the scent of warming chocolate was wafting through the whole apartent, thick and sweet.
Dec. 9th, 2009 05:25 pm (UTC)
Claire wasn't mad, she was hurt. Two very different things in her mind. It wasn't like she hadn't tried and the moment she started acting normal and not on the defense, Sylar flipped. It was probably best to bide her time and then leave.

She had nodded off while the brunette decided that ice cream was still a good idea. So the smell didn't really effect her except in her dreams, where she was in a big bowl boat on a long river of melted milk chocolate.
Dec. 9th, 2009 10:45 pm (UTC)
Sylar poked his head in to the quiet room and frowned to find her already sleeping. Figuring it would be a rude awakening to find him right at right at her side he rapped on the door frame to rouse her. It was too early in the evening, not to mention, "You've been asleep for how many years? I wouldn't think you'd be so anxious to nod off again." His tone had a cautious playfulness to it.
Dec. 9th, 2009 10:51 pm (UTC)
Claire took in a deep breath and rolled over, looking at the knocking noise before actually registering the voice that followed. "Oh... Yeah. I'm just tired." She said, truthfully. But not only was she physically drained, her emotions were a little tired too. She was caught off guard by his somewhat charming demeanor. "What's that smell?"
Dec. 9th, 2009 11:59 pm (UTC)
"Hot fudge sauce," he smiled, something half way between sheepish and impish. "I don't have any bananas for splits, but there are cherries, chopped peanuts, and three differet flavors of ice cream. I figure settling down with that in front of an 'old' movie would be more restorative. What do you say?"
Dec. 10th, 2009 03:07 am (UTC)
"How old?" Claire asked, her ear certainly perking at that. She LOVED movies. Especially movies that were epic when she was young. Ice cream wasn't such a bad thing either. Though she was still a little bummed from earlier, she was sure that Sylar was trying to pick up her spirits, which she thought was incredibly sweet.
Dec. 10th, 2009 03:36 am (UTC)
"I've got silent films in my archives. Live this long and I finally managed to discover the joy of cinema," he grew more confident the more they spoke, sure now he'd be able to coax her back out and start mending the rift between them. "Dramas, comedies, science fiction. But I'm thinking a bit of humor is in order."
Dec. 10th, 2009 04:19 am (UTC)
"Comedy sounds nice." Claire smiled, sort of liking the idea now that Sylar was trying to make amends. "Do you have Shaun of the Dead?" She asked, the movie being one of her favorites.
Dec. 10th, 2009 04:31 am (UTC)
"British zombies, I like your style," he grinned and cocked his head toward the livingroom before heading out that way himself. "And the icecreams are chocolate brownie chunk, caramel turtle, and vanilla bean." He explained, moving to the controls and scrolling through the library of his entertainment center to find the title she asked for.
Dec. 10th, 2009 04:36 am (UTC)
"Chocolate brownie chunk, please." Came a small, but slightly happier voice from the petite blond who padded her way out of Sylar's bedroom. She came to rest on the couch, still a little drowsy from the nap and looking forward to a familiar movie with some yummy dessert. "With everything on it. I need to get fat." She giggled slightly, Claire slowly becoming more comfortable again.
Dec. 10th, 2009 04:49 am (UTC)
"Heh, not often that you hear a girl say that," Sylar chuckled and started the fiim, goig to fix their sundaes while it played through the normal beginning bit. He chose the same dessert as Claire, loving the moist brownie bits and drowned both in warm, gooey chocolate sauce, peanuts, whipped cream and more than just a single cherry apiece. It was a decadent dessert guaranteed to pack more calories than anyone needed in one sitting, except that Claire did and Sylar would never show it.

"You are looking very pretty though. You're getting your glow back," he encouraged as he joined her at last, two bowls stuffed with various incarnations of sugar and two big table spoons.
Dec. 10th, 2009 05:04 am (UTC)
"I... thanks." And Claire blushed, visibly. It was odd hearing that Sylar thought she was pretty. Dirty, in a way. He was older than her when they met by almost ten years. It wasn't like she was a sixteen-year-old being hit on by someone in their thirties, but there was slightly forbidden about him thinking her pretty that gave her a warm feeling in her belly.

Claire Bennet was no longer a plaything to get to and torture her father. Noah Bennet had been long dead by the time Shenoy took her away. So what was it about Sylar that made his tongue seem so shiny silver when he called her things like 'pretty?'
Dec. 10th, 2009 05:34 am (UTC)
He smiled and gave her a wink as he settled in to the sofa and tucked into his ice cream. He kept his eyes on the movie for the most part though, laughing with out reserve at the clever wit and the slapstick comedy. It was such a warm, rich laugh, the likes of which Claire had probably never heard from him.
Dec. 10th, 2009 05:49 am (UTC)
Claire had honestly never seen him smile like that either. She wasn't joking when she'd said he looked handsome when he smiled, though she'd never seen his genuine grin.

"I like this." She finally said, during the zombie impersonations of Shaun and his friends. It was a very random statement and she couldn't look at Sylar at first, keeping her eyes on her now decimated bowl of ice cream.
Dec. 10th, 2009 06:06 am (UTC)
Sylar looked to the side to her, at first not catching on because there was hilarious zombie moaning, but then he heard her and smiled a little wider. "Yeah? Me, too." He popped his last cherry into his mouth and hummed happily. "Its nice to have some one to share my hokey old movies with."
Dec. 10th, 2009 06:14 am (UTC)
Claire smiled and returned to her creamy soup, figuring that she'd said enough for now. Once the movie was over, the blond took her and Sylar's bowl to the kitchen to place in the rinse. Once the dishes were clean, she put them away and padded back into the living area.

"I think I'm going to call it a night now." She smiled, sounding much better than she had earlier. "I..." She began, but she blushed a bit ad her smile widened. "Thank you." She grinned. "I had a very nice day." With that, the girl turned and made her way back to the bedroom.
Dec. 10th, 2009 06:44 am (UTC)
He smiled with a sort of perplexed happiness, not sure what the blush was about but confident it was good. And she'd had a good day after all. In spite of the brief spat, over all it had been good and she was going to bed happy. "Oh, just let me grab some pj's," he padded in after her to get some flannels, being quick about it. He hung on the frame a moment to say good night before ducking out. "Sweet dreams, Claire."
Dec. 10th, 2009 06:48 am (UTC)
"Goodnight." Claire grinned, clicking the light and sliding back underneath the covers. She honestly had good day and part of her still couldn't believe that it was Sylar who made that day so nice. She fell asleep quickly and her dream were happy and nonsensical which left the girl feeling wonderful. If she wasn't careful, she might be able to get used to being herself and in this day and age, was a bad idea.
